Iv been driving this car for about three years now and its been running alright.
I recently replaced the cap plugs wires and it ran awesome except for the major exhaust leak neat engine.
I went out too start it one day and it was cold minus twenty or so and it didn't start so I plugged it in for couple hours then it started but didn't run great. I drove it for a couple days and it got worse till it wouldnt start anymore. I got two new coils msd 2 coils and hooked them up it ran but not good at all. Then again it wouldnt start. I pulled dizzy cap off and noticed one off the contact break points were completely burnt fryed. Ill post pics.

Today I installed the break points and capped them too specs in the Haynes manual I have. It started briefly ran really crappy and then died again. Now when I try too start it it sounds like it wants too start but it don't. Im lost on were too go now.I was wondering if those two things on the right of the dizzy could be the problem they have wires that run into the dizzy? Ill post pics again.
Also how do u check timing if the car won't even start?

Just looking for some advice and were too start next.

This is my 1985 it started and ran good I took the new plugs from it and new coils.
Might do the dizzy swap over shortly too if I can't get this thing running with the original dizzy

Well, the new coils you bought aren't correct for the '79, I'd think.

The points ignition is a 9v system, and most coils are 12v, including the MSD coils that you mention. I'd say it's no surprise that the points were burned out.

So your choice is to get the correct 9v coils or swap the dizzy (along with the ignitors) from your '85. I pulled the points system on my '79 and put electronic in as soon as I could. You're a third of the way there, might as well go all the way. Points are the worst.

12 volt coils will work.

Check the external resitors. They are the two little boxes next to the coils.

As for the "things to the right of the distributer" are you refering to the vacuum advancers? or condensors?

Timming is hella eazy with points on this car. Just set the gap install the distributer with the crank (e-shaft) at tdc (or whatever its called) and turn the distributer till the lead breaker starts to open. I get the timming spot on every time, but I still check it after.

EDIT: remember to put a dab of grease on the cam for the points.

o.k I got the dizzy out of the 85 and cleaned up.

Tomorrow I get the condensers for the points dizzy im gunna give them a try if it don't work im switching it straight away. I know the igniters and coils are all good because the other car runs great.

I find that link very useful except there's no pictures to go with it......

Here are some pics of the new dizzy and the coils.Let me know what u think.

on another note I have a ignition switch problem for the last year or so and the only way I can get the key from turning back off was too wire it up like this just wondering if that could cause problems down the ignition line?

Never use wire nuts in automotive wiring. They don't stand up to vibration at all, and are mainly intended for joining solid large-gauge wires. Problem waiting to happen.

fearfulear69 02-20-14 10:08 AM

Thanks for advice I will solder today have too by one too dizzy swap :-)

KansasCityREPU 02-20-14 10:38 AM

If you haven't done so already, mark the front pulley timing marks before removing the distributor.

fearfulear69 02-20-14 10:58 AM

There is a mark there already when I pull the old dizzy I just drop the other one in the same way like rotor faceting same way ?

Also is there a diagram on the wire up?
Or do I just wire the ignitors too the positive and negative sides of the coils?
If read the walkthrough a couple times.
Also what do I hook the condesor wire up too?

KansasCityREPU 02-20-14 06:11 PM

It's optimal to align the mark then pull the distributor. As long as you know which way it's oriented then you should be good. Just don't spin the motor or move the pulley.

fearfulear69 02-20-14 06:14 PM

So i put the new condesors in i only orderd 2 now i see theres four im getting two more.
it now starts but dosnt run smoothly at all. ill post a link onec i upload it too youtube.

You can get a brand new ignition lock and wire setup from rock auto for less than $40. I know I just about did it (till I came across a used set).

and yeah a bad conection at the keys will make for bad ign at the sparkplug on a points system.

fearfulear69 02-21-14 06:51 AM

Ok ill order one ill still be able too use same key right?

The lock set is like 25 and the switch is like 15. If I'm remebering correctly.

Yes if all you want is the switch then take the one screw out of the back of the tumbler and the switch comes right out.... Scarry how eazy it would be to steal one of these cars.
