Wow. An actual 3-rotor RENESIS

I just saw this on ausrotary.com.

http://www.ausrotary.com/download/file.php?id=2049

Apparently it holds up well, and I don't see an extra-long intermediate plate, which implies that it might be made without super-unobtanium parts. Very cool.

That is so cool, I love 3rotor N/A motors, they make the perfect drift power.........can only dream, sigh!

The Driver 05-27-08 11:24 AM

Would love that in my fd :)

Naegleria_Fowleri 05-27-08 12:04 PM

That is a gorgeous engine. I could only imagine how much power it could potentially make.

Crit 05-27-08 12:28 PM

I'm kinda curious why this is non-technical. There's a lot of technical merit in how they built that engine, but so be it.

R.P.M. 05-27-08 01:07 PM

Jesus I wish I could spatter welds like that....gross

PercentSevenC 05-27-08 01:20 PM

Must be a 4-port.

I've never really looked at Renesis irons before. Are the front and rear port runners (both intake and exhaust) the same size as the intermediate ones? Or could they be ported enough to be? Otherwise you're going to end up with less power from the center rotor.

Common now, we aren't all prof welders

atleast he grinded down the welds on the tubing

mazdaverx713b 05-27-08 01:34 PM

a lot of time went into building that intake manifold and that header, much less the engine. its a beautiful piece of machinery!

ray green 05-27-08 05:15 PM

Crit don't feel bad, they moved my turbo photo off the tech section too. I think our "tech" buddies are becoming a little elitist, only their "tech" is tech.

Anyway, time to reveal my ignorance. If that is a three rotor, why does it have four exhaust pipes? Peripheral exhaust perhaps?

And if so, does that mean the middle pipes share exhaust from two rotors? And why doesn't the regular Renesis have three exhaust pipes, all the RX-8's I've seen have two (although adding a third in the middle might have made the car interesting at least).

RX-7 Chris 05-27-08 05:27 PM

The regular Renesis does have three pipes.

It kind of looks like they sealed up the exhaust ports one the housings...kind of like a reverse peripheral port.

RX-7 Chris 05-27-08 06:16 PM

No idea why they did that.

I helped a guy I know do a turbo setup on an rx-8 and that is what it looked like.

engine is so confusing i see 3 ports that arent ports and 4 exhuast pipes and 4 intake pipes >_<

Misthael 05-27-08 07:47 PM

In the Renesis the intake and exhaust are both in the end/intermediate housings. There are no external ports on the rotor housings. There are actually 6 exhaust ports, it's just that the middle four are consolidated into two because they are beside each other. It's just like the intake, except runners 2 and 3 are combined and runners 4 and 5 are combined. The following picture is of a Renesis block. Notice the rectangular ports on the bottom of the front, intermediate, and rear housings. These are exhaust ports. If you look carefully you can see that the middle port has a split in it where the two runners meet. The only holes on the rotor housings are for intake coolant, like 12As and 13Bs.

PercentSevenC 05-27-08 07:48 PM

Uh, the Renesis doesn't have peripheral exhaust ports. Those are stock rotor housings.

Edit: see above.

datsun1200 05-27-08 07:51 PM

A renesis put that in a 1 gen.

There are three exhaust pipes on a Renesis. The spots where the peripheral exhaust port of a 13B would be, are cast like that in a Renesis. Here is a diagram of what the Renesis exhaust ports are like:
Attachment 705104
Now I would think that the middle rotor of the 20B Renesis would make less power because it has smaller exhaust ports. If you look at the front and rear plates of the two rotor Renesis, you can see that the exhaust ports are larger than that of the shared middle port, which evens out since both rotors have one large port for exhaust, and then a shared port in the middle. But in the case of the 20B Renesis, I would assume that the other intermediate plate also shares ports, meaning that the middle rotor has two smaller shared exhaust ports, whereas the front and rear rotors have one large port, and a shared port.

ray green 05-27-08 08:12 PM

cool

Slammed_GSL 05-27-08 08:16 PM

Ok, remember the Renesis does not have any ports on the rotor housings, everything, intake and exhaust pass through the irons, 2 sides to each housing, the 2nd and 3rd exhaust pipes are shared exhaust by all 3 rotor housings.
These are not like our rotary engines, they are different and yet the same...kinda.
Looking forward to a dumbed down Renesis motor with no ecu....just a carb and spark.

Ok, in the time it took me to find...and fail, others above found illustrations to what I am talking about...

Jeezus 05-27-08 08:24 PM

I wonder if you can bridgeport the exhaust as well as the intake. Would you get overlap then?

Slammed_GSL 05-27-08 08:34 PM

Here's a great thread on the break down of a Renesis motor, lot's of good pics.
You are able to see clearly the intake and exhaust porting on the irons.
Thrashed motor....

LOL! That intake manifold isn't even for that engine...

RoTaRyBoYz 05-27-08 10:06 PM

^ check the original thread, this motor runs and their are several video's of it running with the same intake...
This is the first time someone made a 3 rotor from renesis parts, so don't expect the guy to find off the shelf parts to make it work... all the manifolds had to be custom, so the pic above looked like it was still being sorted and lined up..

I also don't see the sarcarsm or the need for "lol" in your comment
Lets see your custom 1 off 3rotor mr funny guy :squintfin
