Hi all, cant believe I haven't posted here yet...
'79 LE beat black
SA22C549921

got it off of CL from some redneck who wanted to 350 swap it... sigh. $400 and it took a little effort but I got the title! Had an old school 13b 4port in it when I got it with the front bering cracked so all front rotor compression was being lost through there
It's my gf's car so I gave her my '85's stockport 12a with duals on it.
just picked up a pineapple racing pport 13b s4 na though for it with a 48 ida that'll be going in within a few weeks. I put '84 front suspension on it and an '83 GSL rear. yeah yeah not original anymore but w/e
sorry these are the only pics I have...

The guy in the Ferrari was pissed I wasn't letting him have 2 parking spaces bc idt money should buy privilege lol he made his son get out after he pulled out to ensure I didn't hit him... idt he understood there are less '79 LE's in the world than his Ferrari haha

I own, purchased it brand new back in Oct of 1982, a Canadian special edition 1982 GX. Made only that year for the Canadian market. Has..
4 wheel disc brakes
FW = formula white only
tan interior, dash, doors, floor mats, carpet, tan leather seats
moon roof
power everything... windows, door locks, air condition, cruise
headlight washers right and left
rear hatch with wiper, defrost

I added my new LS to the list but it looks like I need to go through the thread and update the list as there are several members that added their info that are not included in the list.

Is this worth posting on your registry. Well I know it is since speedometer reads to 130 MPH. Got lots of photos of this. Will send pictures as soon as I can. Need to fix email on laptop. If they only made 2500 world wide most you will never find not even junk yards because they have been crushed.

mazdaverx713b 07-13-17 05:33 AM

If its a true LS, then yes, we will add it to the registry. The speedometer may have been replaced with an earlier 130 mph unit. It was a Federal regulation that ALL speedometers be calibrated to no higher than 85 mph in 1980 and all Leather Sports were built well into 1980. They were introduced in May of 1980, which was late in the model year. Mazda would not have let one slide with an incorrect speedometer. The font on the 79 versus the 80 instrument cluster were different. Look at the font on the speedometer you have and see if it matches the font on the tachometer.

1980 Mazda RX7 Leather Sport

The wheels on the 80 RX are yes from 81 or so. They are not the original like your 80 RX . When I found the car parked in a junk yard many years ago the wheels in back were a gold alloy as picture shows. Anyway very unlikely anyone tampered with the speedometer. And what purpose would that have served. I don't know about fonts but this is unusual and going to find out what gives. Thanks for replying to my tread. I just new to this.

eif645 07-18-17 11:44 PM

So what is the process that is required to list my 1980 Mazda RX7 LS Leather Sport Edition on the Registry. I have engaged in two or three treads about the Mazda that I own and have been trying to get validation on the unusual features of this Leather Sport Edition that I have. Rear Wheels and the speedometer dial showing 130 MPH. Along with the treads I have started an album and uploaded several pictures. This is a work in progress. Album is under my user name eif645. Feel free to browse and advise. Thanks.

mazdaverx713b 07-19-17 05:37 AM

I looked through your pictures and it appears that you have a 1980 GS trim level RX-7 with the 81-85 standard aluminum wheels. The leather Sport came only in Solar Gold, Brilliant Black, and Aurora White. Your car appears to be Tornado Silver Metallic, color code K8. Look on the firewall on the right side of the engine compartment to find the vin tag complete with color code and see what the color code is. The speedometer font is not correct for the instrument cluster and I would believe that it was replaced. It was common for that to happen as people preferred the speedometer that went to 130 mph over the original 85 mph unit. The speedometer in my LS was replaced with the 130 mph speedometer but I have the original in a box. The original owner said that the speedometer unit had failed and he sourced an earlier unit for the increased speed readout. I am going to rebuild my original speedometer and reinstall it.

You'll also want to note the build date of your 7. The build date in on the body near the striker plate when you open the driver's door. I've been doing some research on this and the LS's have had some odd build dates and they really are strange given the model's late May 1980 release.

Banzai 07-19-17 06:06 AM

You already have a picture of your VIN tag in your profile pictures, which does show Tornado Silver (K-8) paint code.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...43f460336c.jpg

Dave is correct in what he points out. LS's all had a brown interior to include the carpets and door panels and brown leather seats, steering wheel and shift knob coverings. They all came with the same gold waffles and had different electric door mirrors that could be adjusted with a control down by the choke and rear hatch release button on the left of the steering wheel.

Do any 1979 Limited owners on here happen to have a copy of their original factory "window sticker" available to post a photo of it??

Just curious to see one.

Thanks

Not one of my cars, just a pic from one that came up for sale this past year. 79 Limited's were all 5 speed, GS models w/sunroof's and the "Limited package" applied. The package included the paint, pin stripes, wheels w/RWL tires, grey velour interior, leather covered steering whl and shift knob (yes, they are different than standard GS cars)quartz digital clock, different stereo w/amp and 4 speakers and B-pillar badges.

Thanks for posting it!

So my dad purchased what appears to be a 79 Limited from the same guy we got my 9/78 car from. Not sure the VIN, will try to get it this weekend. Came with the original wheels, but they're in pretty gnarly shape with really old tires so he robbed the wheels off his Rx4 to bring it home. Body is pretty straight and he had the seats/door panels redone before he brought it home. Missing one of the Limited badges, if anyone has a spare laying around...

mazdaverx713b 09-13-19 05:50 AM

It was the only SA with a paint code of E6, Beat Black Metallic. That's the single identifying mark if all other Limited items were removed. Either way it looks like a great car to restore!!

Progress

Bought in 2019. Folks I bought it from didn’t do much as for they had no title. Car was for his son, kid was old enough to drive yet. Eventually they bought him another car and the title showed up for rx7. They decided to sell. 77,000 miles. WRL tire in the rearhatch. When changing tires still had inspection sticker from factory. Still have the sunroof envelope. There is no A/C For it has been removed. Kinda dinged up a little bit but the more you look the more you like. Have replaced fuel tank among other things.

mazdaverx713b 08-03-20 05:38 AM

That inspection sticker is pure unobtanium gold right there! Never in my 23 years of owning and working on these cars have I seen that sticker! Incredible!

Banzai 08-03-20 08:43 AM

Actually, you find them on most 79 Limited rims, but never on a regular waffle or keyhole rim. Why only those, I couldn't tell you. I've cleaned up 6 or 7 sets of those rims over the years but only ever saw about two different inspector names on the stickers.

mazdaverx713b 08-09-20 07:51 AM

That would make sense. I've never had a set of the Almex wheels. Pretty cool to see they were inspected so thoroughly!

I obtained my 79 Limited in May of 2018 off of eBay. Number 545582. I really thought I had more pics than this, but I guess I'll have to add a photo shoot to my todo list if it ever stops raining here in middle Tennessee. It has been one wet summer.
The main thing I have done to it since purchasing it is reupholstering the seats. It took me two weekends to get the covers made, but they turned out better than I anticipated as an amateur. It also sports a Rotary Engineering intake and Weber IDF carb. So far that's the only mod I have seen -- everything else appears to be stock still.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e059e81e53.jpg
The day I brought it home! It lives in the garage, though. ;-)
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...7c7a11276b.jpg
Both seats looked about the same.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f24f93e0ec.jpg
But the home made covers definitely turned out pretty close to the originals.

Thanks for the additional pics. She definitely doesn't get out as much as she should; hopefully Tennessee's lifting of the emissions test requirement should help. I've had it registered as a weekender only and on the weekends I'm almost always hauling the family around.

Info for Registry

I have number 80 of 150 Canadian 1979 RX-7 Limited Edition, serial number SA22C-551577, and it currently lives in Missouri. I bought it in Vancouver BC, and it moved to Missouri in 2008. It has always been garaged and maintained, is 95% original, except the electronic ignition.
It currently has 53,000 kilometers (yes km's not miles as the speedo is metric) and it only comes out on sunny days.

Just curious, I know there were 79 Limiteds sold in Canada, but is there some source that says the number was 150? Never heard that before. What indicates that yours is #80?

Long story...
I bought my first Limited Editon from the Charles Levy Motor Company in Columbus Georgia when I was a brand new Army Infantry Lieutenant, and took it to Germany with me to sell there. After three years of FUN driving, I brought it back (dumb move) and ended up selling it to get a down payment for a house. $6500 to a guy who gave it to his college bound son, whom I was told wrecked it shortly thereafter. Fast forward to 2010, when my youngest son (16 yrs old at that time) asked what did the car look like. An internet search and page like 13 found one for sale in Canada. I purchased it from the original owner, who bought it new; the parts manager of the dealership that had it. Always garaged, pleasure car for him and his wife,

no kids. He lost his wife to cancer earlier that year, and through a number of phone calls and Skypes, I bought the car, and had it shipped to Missouri, where it now resides in a climate controlled garage, and only comes out to play when my wife of 43 years and I go for a drive. Lots more to the story, but...
In my conversations with him, he had contact with Mazda International, who issued him the plaque you see here. That is my story Senator, as far as I can recollect. More photos of the actual auto to come.

Always amazes me, the new things you can learn here about these cars. This is the first plaque I've heard of surfacing. I know some original owners received name plates and/or a line drawing with their Limited purchases. I think those may have been a dealer sponsored program.
Thanks for the info. Would be interested in seeing some pics of your car too.

This a beautiful 83 LE!!! How long have you owned the car?

Nwfd3s 02-17-22 04:34 PM

A couple weeks now. My very first rx7 was a 79 limited. The digital clock, neat seat pattern and cool shifter made me want to find another model. My favorite rx7 was a 83 gsl and this was the perfect combo of my two favorite first generation models.

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Two lady's owned it, first bought it new and maintained it like a treasure, she sold it to a 50 yr old lady who drove it only a few hundred miles over several years. Garaged kept at all times, perfect maintenance records.

Truly a time capsule and a gift to own.

mazdaverx713b 02-21-22 05:58 AM

The car appears to be as you state, a time capsule. Its absolutely gorgeous. You're very lucky to own the car. I can't praise it enough!
