i bought a new surround/boot for my 79 in 2006 (8/15/06 to be exact), no problem getting it... i had a 5/78 car though, so it was the early black one with no chrome. 8871-64-350A-00

It isn't paint, BTW (wouldn't THAT be nice) - its actually a chroming process for plastics. And there are companies (seen listed in Hemmings) that re-chromes plastic. Would LOVE to have my inside door-pull's chrome insert strip re-done....

As soon as the zero-visibility, lung-collapsing SMOKE dissipates (forest fires all around Fairbanks at the mo) - I'll wonder back to my parts dept and see what else I can amaze/annoy everyone with...

20+ years of LA commute traffic = one HELL of a lot of shifting. Time was my left calf muscle was actually larger than my right - - socks wouldn't fit over it properly.

No no no... I don't mean the chrome trim ring around the boot; I mean the silvery-pewter color paint everywhere else except the coin holder slots. Shifter surround and radio surroud are both painted that color, sort of a matte pewter color, but it does fade/wear with years.

well, the boot is about a half hour away tucked in the storage bin of my 10AE..so pics aren't available yet.

Stu, i agree that most parts should be saved..some parts though could be used for restoration of a show car. just my opinion here.

Neat thread. It's cool to see all these beautiful, virgin Mazda parts. I happened upon this thread a couple days ago by accident. Since then, I had what to me was an awesome "unobtanium" discovery of my own.

A gentleman in the local Mazda club posted an ad saying he'd sold his car but still had some parts left to sell. Since he lived 10 minutes from my house, I couldn't resist checking it out.

Most of what he was selling was heavily used, but I picked up one of the Mazda Finish Line-type RX-7 front end bras for my '88 GTU, one of the large-format FSMs in excellent condition, one of those error code checkers that comes pre-assembled in a fancy box to replace my hastily cobbled-together LED concoction, etc...

Then from one of the dusty corners of his stash emerged this gem, a brand new, never-installed driver's side urethane aero extension for the front corner of the car. My GTU came with them from the factory and mine are quite nice, but the driver's side front piece has a minor missing chunk that has always bothered me. What are the chances of finding one of these brand new at all, let alone the exact one of the four that I actually need on my car?

(Admittedly, this may not really qualify as "unobtanium" since for all I know Mazda is still selling them, but certainly for more than the $5 I paid!)

Those are VERY hard to find.. I haven't been able to find any NOS anywhere in the last 7-8 years.

ahhh, but I HAVE found one: its a Zero-Mile 80 SA on display at the Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit (Museum of Technology and Labor), in Mannheim, Germany. On my to-visit list!

Today: NOS Nikki Carb.
So technically, is this REALLY Unobtainium-status? I know you can still buy carb _parts_, but generally complete units of ANYthing disappear off mazda parts lists fairly soon: complete engines, trannys, etc.

This was an ebay purchase spec'd for an unknown FB model year (ANYBODY KNOW!!???) automatic. Because the Lister said it was for an Auto, NO one bid. I stole it for $180. Retail, back in the day: $900. My Master Plan was Total Sterlingization - to which Carl assured tranny type made no diff. The results here are post-conversion. I, perhaps stupidly, asked Carl to leave all the hardware dodads, normally removed, ON it (I just needed the manual choke to work). Since I had the Lister mail the carb directly to Sterling, I was rather shocked at how %$#@! heavy the damn thing is! So re-thinking maybe pulling some of the dead-weight off it. Awaiting Carl's advice on that.

Plus, I have GOT to put some kind of clear-coat on this bad boy to keep it looking this shiny!!

Its perched atop a supplied (prototype?) 79 SA mani, ported, polished and powdercoated by Carl.

I am thinking once Carl helps me sort this, it will NOT be used as a static display...

both that aero extension and that carb are just awesome!!! i've never seen a carb that perfect before!! definatly cleatcoat is before that cadmium plating oxidizes and that aluminum fades!!!!!!!

it was nice working at the dealership, for stuff like that carb. my friend had one like that, it wasn't new but replaced under warranty, so it was nearly new. its very pretty

someday, i'd like to have a nice restored 81-82 car, like the SA those are fun stock...

-mods on carb mostly invisible, tho Carl's handiwork with the manual secondaries is notable on 3/4 shot with wiring on linkage...
