speaking of unobtanium parts..
i recently aquired two awesome unobtanium parts. i think Stu, Mike, Ray, and Glen would appreciate these for sure. there are a coule FC pars but they're rare none the less. the first is a NEW red 84-85 shift knob. according to the tag its been on the shelf since 94. happened to be the last one in the country and is now no longer available. a keen eye will note the white R for reverse, which is different from the original design:
http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/DSC08620.jpg the second is original unopened 10AE pillow. it came with the 88 10AE when new, so i assume there were only 1500 of those produced as well: http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC08503.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC08502.jpg the final part is my original key for my 10AE: http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC05421.jpg just wanted to share with everyone and maye see some other rare parts that people have! |
i will also be adding more neat unopened oem parts later. so if you guys have any of that stuff, i'd love to see it!
|
I'm learning to enjoy the taste of jealosy, hanging out with you guys...
Beautiful goodies. |
You're random oddball OEM parts never cease to amaze me Dave lol, Very cool stuff.
|
Way to start my weekend off Dave by stoking my daydreams with your bling. I often dream about a time machine capable of transporting me to/from the early 1980s on an OEM parts shopping spree.

Hey Dave, I'll trade you a pair of 84/85 GSL red leather seats, slightly used but in good shape, for this:

ok, i dug out some more parts. in the way of unobtanium, i found my new oem GS badge which is no longer available. this will probably end up going on my ocean blue 85 GS:
http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/DSC08628.jpg next up are a pair of 3 pin RX-7 fender badges. while still available, they are still pretty neat: http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/DSC08626.jpg found an vacuum hose routing diagram sticker for the 1980 model year RX-7: http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/DSC08624.jpg finally, while still available, i find these little guys neat to have on hand. i keep these on hand in my restoration parts. a pair of upper coil brackets: http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/DSC08629.jpg |

Dave - some neat stuff! Knob is true Unobtainium - dare you to actually -*gasp*- USE it!?
10thAE key borders on Industrial Art. Man, for a key like that for the SA.... My humble NOS, etc. contributions to The Drool List: -Complete Coil assemblies -SA fan shroud -SA hand brake cover -and one of my restored Head lamp motor assemblies Let's see... what else have I got squirrled away.... ;) Stu Aull 80GS Alaska |
Stu, i'm not sure if i'm gonna use the shift knob or not..i'm going to try and find another maroon shift knob for use in my maroon interior swap. the only way this will be used is IF the car that i'm planning on restoring is 100% complete and painted and looking 100% perfect and original. basically a show car. my intent is not to build a show car. the mileage on the GSL is too high..so it will probably sit inside with the 10AE pillow and floor mats..which i should post a pic of...
at any rate, i'm jealous of those coils and SA hand brake cover..how long have you had those parts? do you just randomly aquire parts and save them for a just in case moment? |
ok, here are some pics of my original 10AE floor mats. they were intheir original bag and unopened when i got them. i opened them because after my 10AE is fully finished and completely restored, i intend to take it to car shows. when i do, i will use the mats and bring the pillow and the 10AE brochure and if i can figure out how to edit the vin number on the scan of a 10AE window sticker that i have to make it reflect my vin and original dealer name and address, i'll take that too..but im not so handy with editing software.. at any rate, here are the mats:
http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07383.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07385.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07387.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07393.jpg http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/DSC07391.jpg |
Wow. And I thought I was cool just because I have an original pair that isn't quite worn out yet.
|
you're cool Ray and you have some sweet parts! i'd love to trade you for the knob but i've wanted one of these bad boys for quite some time..and what i paid for it would be no comparison to the value of the seats. the seats are worth quite a bit more.

About three years ago I saw a new out of box original OEM red leather covered steering wheel come up on ebay. I bid up to $120 but it went for $200+.
Imagine, a set of new original leather seats.... So Dave, how much was that knob anyway? Do they have any more? |
well, the knob listed for $39.00. since it had been on the shelf so long, the guy sold it to me for $25 plus $10 shipping. i didnt argue and happily paid it. the guy said it was the last one inthe country.. there may be more, who knows. the part number is:

10thAE mats are exquisite Dave! Yeah, throw 'em in the car to show, and bag them before you drive away :)
We are all idiots, of course - to torture ourselves out of the the pleasure of the USE of the stuff vs "it-s-only-new-once" mind-set. I have a brand new leather-wrapped LS steering wheel f@@king with my mind as we read this... oog. Stu Aull 80GS Alaska |

|
The dinosaur museum industry is just getting going up there in AK (or is it AL? That would be Arkansas and Alabama to me, not sure what Alaska is doing for initials these days).

Nice parts...
FWIW - Ever wondered why the 10AE pillows were red and not white? :dunno: Last I checked you could get them through rotarynews.com |

Oh man! Where did you get the SA pilliow? I want one,.
|
This is going to turn into the most obscure RX-related item thread isn't it?
Don't make me unlock the vault. heheh j/k |

haha- weird story. so my aunt had an 82 GSL auto that she bought new. My mom was looking through some catalog, and saw an rx-7 pillow, and got it for her. Fast forward to 2007, I'm over at my aunts house, asking if she has any pictures of her car. She goes to look, and comes back w/ that pillow! Last time I'd seen it I was like 5, and I thought it was a porsche 911, lmao.
There is one on Ebay right now for $100, I want one but not $100 want one. |

Thank YOU for getting past the pillow-talk! Was beginning to remind me of those 60's Frankie Avalon flics (Frankie WHO?) -
;) So. Rooted thru The Collection for some swag of NOS SA bits that might be view-worthy: Bought all these years ago when it became apparent Mazda was starting to delete RX7 trim pieces from inventory. It was like this tug-o-war between me and the Mazda parts dept about how much I could afford to buy each month vs how many parts they could discontinue before I showed up! -Silver radio panel: "double rectangle" LS/Limited for the fancier Clarion radios these models came with. Discontinued. Never seen this version in BLACK, so I am assuming it was never available?? Anyone confirm/deny this?? -Silver radio panel: standard, 2-hole radio. Now discontinued. Have the black version too, but seemed redundant here. -shift boot only. Bit unusual to get this w/o having to buy the whole plate assy. Parts Book does list it as a separate part tho... -79 Black shift plate/boot - these were equipped in early 79s, which only offered BLACK center console trim (ie shift AND radio panels). Note black surround around the boot. The surround trim is part of the plate. This piece is, for the moment, NOT classified as Unobtainium because I believe mazda still stocks this... -80 Sliver shift plate/boot - actually came out in late 79 production. I believe the 79 Limited's came with this version, for eg. The silver surround is a _separate_ piece of chromed plastic that fits into the plate; the boot attaches to this trim. Stu Aull 80GS Alaska |
i would nearly kill for that last shifter boot pic. on my LS, the chrome ring on my shifter trim plate is starting to flake...
|
You guys have some awesome parts. Unfortunately the rarest thing I have is only rare because there are people out there that don't own FB's
|
80 shifter surround; the chrome on mine literally wore off in the section forward of the shift boot, from boot friction over the years. I covered it with chrome restoration tape; you have to know to look for the seams near the corners to even notice it.
I replaced my completely exhausted vinyl shift boot some years ago with a leather one I made myself. Ironically, I went looking for a new surrond about a week after Mazda officially ran out of them. Least now I know who got the last one, Stu... (lol) Stu, if you ever have a day with absolutely NOTHING better to do, you ought to take that silver surrond to a paint shop and have them use their color analyzer camera on the 'silver' paint... I'd love to know a precise color match mix so I could re-paint mine. Can't find a reference for the color formula anywhere. |
