Not yet, I'm looking around for a pilot bearing puller, I'm going to go to a Mazda dealership this week, and the pilot bearing and seal haven't arrived from Mazdatrix yet, it takes them forever to ship to the east coast (about 2 weeks). I should be updating soon though. Sorry about the wait.

ncb13 04-16-10 07:55 PM

not at all. all be doing mine in 2 weeks

food7373 04-23-10 04:12 PM

I decided to go with a dremel because the mazda puller is a little over my budget right now. I will be doing it possibly tonight, and if not tonight then sometime next week, but I got my new bearing and seal, so I want to get the tranny back in asap.

food7373 04-27-10 08:43 PM

So tonight somehow turned into me and my dad working on the RX7 all night, don't know how it really happened. But 1st we changed the front brakes, and I have to change the rear brakes tomorrow. Then we decided to see if we could get the pilot bearing out, and the dremel worked miracles along with the a screwdriver. We used the dremel to cut the lip of the bearing a little, then used the screw driver to pry up the lip, and everything went smooth from there. As the Hayne's Manual says, "Installation is reverse of removal". So we got the tranny back in tonight, along with the driveshaft, then we ran out of daylight. So tomorrow I will get everything back on the transmission and make sure everything is good to go, then I will change the rear brakes. After that, I'm just waiting for wheels and tires to arrive, then off to inspection my car goes. Woo-hoo. (Sorry for no pictures, we were in a rush because of daylight.)

Cool to be doing projects like that with your dad.

You did a lot better than I did, took my neighbor and me a whole weekend to dremmel, beat, chisel and curse that thing out.

Photos and a video of the maiden run would be nice.

food7373 04-28-10 05:50 AM

I will get vids up once I get my thermostat in the mail, it should be coming today or tomorrow. But once it's here, I will get vids up.

mazdaverx713b 04-28-10 10:18 AM

would also love to see pics of the work you're doing! great way to document the work you've done and you can use the pics as reference should you need them in the future.

food7373 04-28-10 11:42 AM

I will grab some pics of the chewed up bearing, re-installing the starter, and maybe changing the rear brakes. I wanted to grab pictures last night when putting the transmission back in, but I was in such a rush to beat the daylight. Sorry about that, but I like to take pictures as much as possible.

food7373 04-28-10 08:52 PM

Busy day guys, no pictures today, but hopefully tomorrow. I'm having a problem with the last thing I need to do, replacing the thermostat. Some of the bolts stripped the inside of where the bolts go in, so I needed to run out and get longer bolts with the same threads to make them go in deeper, so they could grab on the deeper threads that weren't stripped. Soooo, tomorrow hopefully everything goes well, and I get pictures and videos up for you guys. But I did get everything back in underneath today, and filled up all the fluids, so tomorrow will hopefully be a good day. :icon_tup:

mazdaverx713b 04-28-10 09:34 PM

dont buy longer bolts!! go and buy a tap and re-tap the threads. then if you need, buy new bolts or i'll send you a pair for noting.

food7373 04-29-10 05:57 AM

How much is a cheap tap and die set? $40-$50?

mazdaverx713b 04-29-10 01:40 PM

buy one tap from napa for less than $5 and an Irwin tap holder can be purchased for about the same from home depot. i'll get you the correst size tap and post here for your reference.

they're larger than that, more like 10 or 12mm with a pitch of like 1.25.

The threads are 6mmx1.00. I might have a bud come over and tap them for me since he knows how to do that, but right now is time for pics. Sorry about large pics.

looking good! thanks for sharing the pics!

food7373 04-30-10 05:50 AM

Thanks, I'm just wondering, is that shift knob aftermarket or a Mazda shift knob? Either way, I really like it.

mazdaverx713b 04-30-10 06:16 AM

based on what i've seen, the shift knob is aftermarket. the original shift knob is much different and displays the typical "H" pattern.

ray green 04-30-10 07:45 AM

Wow, quite a project, and a pretty one at that!

food7373 04-30-10 10:55 AM

Thanks man, for $500 it wasn't a bad deal.

food7373 04-30-10 04:13 PM

Well more good news, and a tad bit of bad news, maybe some really bad news but here it is.
1. RX7 started right up!!! YAY!
2. Tach stopped working, and that's and easy fix? I believe it should be.
3. The car goes fowards and back, so that means my mission didn't fail, sorta.
4. There is still a grinding in the transmission, so possibly I will be replacing the transmission, or getting a rebuild. :(
5. Windshield wipers and spray doesn't work. That has to be working for inspection.
6. Temp gauge works!!!! YAY!

and I believe that's it. I will probably be replacing the transmission before June 6th, because that's auto-x day, and since I just did a transmission drop, it should be fairly easy. I didn't get any videos yet, sorry about that. I do have videos of taking my friends cobra 'stang out after school. I will post videos of that later though. So either way, I think the good outweighs the bad. :)

2. make sure you have spark on leading and trailing, the tach runs off of one or the other (its supposed to be leading in 79, but it might be switched with the 81+ ignition), also possible its not charging, the tach acts like a voltmeter

5. simple circuit, but pop the pump out, and see if its all clogged with crap, the blue washer fluid turns solid....

food7373 05-01-10 09:47 PM

Thanks for that info. I will check the spark this week, but the car seems to not be having any problems starting up, but I will figure it out this week. I will also check the pump for the wipers, but before I took the transmission out, it worked fine. We will see though, but thanks for the info.

food7373 05-03-10 09:27 AM

Video of my friends cobra later today so stay tuned. I will get videos of my car as soon as it stops raining. Sorry about the wait.
