Anyone tried modifying a R1/R2 front splitter for a FB?

I was looking at some old pictures of my R1 that I used to have and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to modify and fit the R1/R2 air splitter below one of the common FB front air dams such as the Mariah or the Mazdatrix?

The R1 splitter has a seam right down the middle if I remember correctly. If it is too curved, then it could possibly be sawed from the back and bent accordingly (I'm not sure that is clear). This could then be riveted to the air dam.

This would be perfect for running brake ducting.

Here are some pictures of my old stable for visual reference:

84-85 have slits down there for brake cooling. I am just too lazy to get some dryer ducting :(

Well, my slits are going as I mounted a Mariah Mode 1 widebody and it does not retain the brake ducts so I will have to do something custom anyway as I was getting brake fade last weekend with heavy breaking from 140mph.

I'm sure someone has tried this and it is always better/cheaper to learn from the mistakes of others.

Anyone? How about photoshop? Or, if anyone has an R1 lip they would like to donate to science...

the FB is very flat in the front, i think the FD is much more rounded.

hmm, maybe an FC lip would work better?

Pictures of said FC lip please. I've owned FCs and none of them had lips. Maybe they were missing.

Well, that is not a stock piece and I dont think that will wokr or look better than the stocl R1 piece.

i did it on an sa

i will send pics from my other computer since you can't see it that well on my site link, but here are some pics of my 2 79 limiteds. notice the 3rd gen strut brace on an sa...

http://www.gummels.com/gallery2/main...d=11&g2_page=1

yeah, I know all you noobs and haters are going to trash me on the strut brace design but I dont give a shit. i got it on there...and it is set up to triangulate to the firewall when i get some time to fabricate the cross pieces. there is a piece that goes inside the wiper well behind the wiper rack so it triangulates with 1/4" stee; instead of just firewall thickness (thinness). if you're going to trash it, let's see you do it better. oh, and let's see you do it without going to home depot.

PS it works with a factory air cleaner, too.

made an aluminum plate that i riveted with 1/4" stainless rivets to the original engine under plate. cut 6 or so inches from the center and 3" from each side.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we have a forum.....

Very nice. :)

Awesome! Exactly what I was looking for. Gotta love original RX-7 parts being used on ther RX-7s.

Very nice!

This has to be the most epic win, successful thread I have ever seen.

AND I will agree. That looks decently good. (I think really good. FBs have to work HARD to capture me.)

The FD lip transforms the whole look of the car. I'd go so far as to say that's my favourite SA/FB ever.

MmSadda 06-12-10 05:48 PM

Honestly, not a big fan of that front lip on that car... everything else about the car is nice, though. What are those wheels? They look surprisingly close to Dodge...

nitsudg 06-12-10 06:07 PM

since you asked...

wheels are 17x7 TSW VX-1 from the late 90's. Tried to replicate the wheels from the 1995 Rx-01 show car. Sunk a full sized spare into the spare well. Rear wing is off a 95 Mx-6 with custom center pedestal extension. Other than that, the wing fits perfect--even has the same curve as the rear hatch glass as if it was meant to go on there. Had to do a finger loop on the hatch latch so I could lift the hatch without squishing my fingers between the wing and the glass--there is only about 3/4" clearance.

I appreciate the respect. Been my project since 1991.
