(IGNITION) My Direct Fire Brackets

Spent a little time today at work. I have my coil hanger made for 3 coils and a bracket for my MSD. I will post more picks when it is all wired up.

Wow man, I want to be the first to congratulate you on the rediculous amount of effort for those brackets. That's possibly the best setup I've seen, and actually from what I see on the fenderwall the whole car might be pretty interesting. Are you a machinist? Skills like that would be very helpful on a 1st Gen project car...sweeet.

RacerX7fb 11-09-03 07:58 PM

Very nice fabrication work  is that a GT or EP class car?

Rotary13B1 11-09-03 10:51 PM

 Looks great! Would you make a few to sell??? I'd be interested in the coil setup.

Re-Speed.com 11-10-03 11:28 AM

Yes, Yes and Maybe

NanaimoRx-7, I have been a CNC machinist for 8 some odd years now. I love what I do. The time really was not that much. I had the idea and measured two existing holes in the chassis. I then drew it up in Solid Works, took about 5 minutes. Emailed the file to my work address and had it programmed in about 5 minutes as well. The program ran 4 minutes per half. I have a total of 18 minutes in them :)

RacerX7fb, This is actually a Rally car. I will most likely run some track days and stuff as well.

Rotary13B1, I have thought about making some stuff to sell, but I do not know. What would you pay for it?

$20-25 bucks for the bracket... is that an ok figure?? I'm not sure what the materials cost.. I'm sure there are other ways to mount those coils, but this is superduper clean!

rotarygod 11-10-03 01:33 PM

I suddenly feel shrinkage coming on when staring at my car now.

bouis 11-10-03 01:58 PM

It is nice, but I think that the sub-zero starting assist tank's bracket is a much better place to put the MSD.

You'll barely even notice that it's there.

My rally computer will be on the dash in front of the passenger with the pickup wire for the wheel sensor passing by the spot you are talking about. I need my ignition as far from this wire as possible. Front corner near the coils works perfect for me.

Frickin awsome Billy! :) Nice job on the seam welding and fab work too! May I ask how you engineered the fram reinforcement bars? Just a WAG? Or some serious engineering? Any more pics of the frame?

Yep it was pretty stupid wasn't it! (not the brackets) :D

Glazedham42 11-10-03 06:23 PM

That is a beautiful job on those brackets! I'm taking a machining class right now for my mechanical engineering degree at Purdue.

I have developed a deep respect for anyone that can machine good parts like that, quickly and efficiently.

I'd pay $20 for one of those. I'm getting ready to do my DLIDFIS and I think that would come in very handy.

You have any intentions of mass producing those?

That is what I like to hear. An Engineer interested in how the parts are manufactured. I have seen many Engineers over the years that could not operate a hand drill.

I have a few parts I am thinking about bringing out. I want to choose the right ones and limit it to a hand full.

Rx7carl, I knew I wanted to tie the struts into the main cage inside the car. The cross tube was bent on this shell along with some sheet metal damage. I removed the parts that hold the hood hinges and radiator support because one was tweaked and the cross bar. I had to reinforce the area where those two parts mated so it looked like a good opportunity to tie the location of the sway bar mounts to the strut towers. I then added the square tubes for mounting the radiator, oil cooler, ducting and such. I needed to reinforce the top of the strut towers so I designed plates that would act as both caster/camber adjustment and strengthening. They are .250 mild steel I cut on the water jet. Then finished it all up with some seam welds and paint.

Those look sooo sweet, Nice job man!

Very Clean

Rx7carl 11-10-03 08:51 PM

LOL, I know what you mean Billy. Some engineers crack me up. As a good friend (and fellow aircraft mech) once said, "all brains and no common sense". :D

Nice triangulation, should be strong like bull! Water jet? Must be nice to have such toys at ones disposal, along with the CNC stuff. I'm more like Fred Flintstone with what I have availible to me. :D

Cloud 11-10-03 10:40 PM

Very nice. More show than go, IMO - on a rally car, I would want all ignition components mounted less rigidly - but that's just me. Very nice work though!

To all the other people - cheapasses! A nice triple coil mount like that is worth WAY more than 25 bucks. I'm sure they'd sell at ~75 pretty easily. Even that would be a steal, IMO.

CheddaKing 11-10-03 10:54 PM

Good work man, looks beautiful!

Yeah... the billet alum that it's milled from is probably worth 25 bucks alone.

Sterling 11-11-03 07:43 AM

Super job- looks awesome!
I'm no machinest, but I'm lucky enough to have a milling machine and South Bend lathe.

I can get close to that good but it takes me days and alot of wasted material. I have a friend that owns a machine shop, and I've come to visit just to watch the guys work. The older guys that don't work the CNC machines seem like they are moving slowly and methodically, but they're popping parts out really fast!
I've already tried to make my own. I would buy one of yours.

Gregs 11-11-03 08:00 AM

keep us informed if your gonna do a group buy type thing
im in for sure

RX7Carl- I'm not sure if I really want to send my carb to Fred Flintstones speed shop! Will I have to feed the little dinosaurs installed in my NIKKI?;)

vipernicus42 11-11-03 09:20 AM

If you can make one that mounts in basically the same position but horizontally (so that the coils hang vertical) I'd definitely be interested. $50 is about what I'd pay for it, but only because I hate ghetto-looking setups, and that bracket looks absolutely awesome!

What does it cost you to make it? (materials, a half-hour of your time let's say, and an extra 10% for the idea), and we'll see. I'm sure it'll be a *huge* hit with guys on the forum doing DLIDFIS setups.

Now if someone could make a kit for the ignitor/heatsink hanger combos out of old 486 heatsinks and some sheet metal, we'd be all set ;)

Nice job man, I'd love to see more pics.

LetsGO7 11-11-03 09:37 AM

dude....i have been doing some machine work myself and materials doesn't come easy. I think the price would be more 50. and to add more on labor.....wow, that's alot.

Well at least from my stand point, bwaits might be different though. He knows where to get materials cheap, and so the price would go down. I would say that inorder for him to make some money...he would have to see 10 or more on a buy list with deposit.
