Okay first off I'm using a webcam for the pics 'cause it's all I have right now, so please bear with me....

I'm painting the engine bay on the 7 and I'm trying to eliminate every uneeded wire and connector. I'm really trying to get things cleaned up under there once and for all. I must say it is a total mess by the brake booster. Can someone please tell me what these two relay things are for.

I'm pretty sure that the black one is related to the air conditioning? but I want to be sure before I rip it outta there. :D The black one has two wires that run to the passenger side of the firewall where it plugs in with two bullet connectors. Pictured below.

There are also some other wires that come from underneath the relay and run into the oblivion of electrical tape, so I'm not sure where they go to.

The silver rusty colored thing I have no idea about. I would like to get it out of there but I don't know what it does, so unless someone can confirm that it is useless, it stays put for now. Also there is a green wire with a red stripe on it that comes out of the main loom. It isn't plugged into anything and I just want to know what it is for too. You can see it pictured below, it is the one that runs through the middle of the picture...

The black relay is for your A/C your right. The silver one is the choke/check relay IIRC. Use the wiring diagram to figure out if you need that or not.

Here are a few more things I am wondering about as well. One is the oscillator. Forgive the stupidity but I have no clue what the oscillator is for. Do I need it? Is it part of the emissions stuff or does it actually serve a useful purpose? It is broken off of its bracket and just laying by the headlight right now, so I'm trying to decide if it is something that I even need to keep...

Here is something else that has me scratching my head. This hose comes out of the passenger side of the firewall and has been chopped off since I bought the car. I don't know what it does, what it hooks to or why it is there. Nothing has ever leaked out of it, but I'd like to either cut it off the rest of the way or fix it. Whichever is necessary. What does this hose do??

I have the haynes manual, and the factory manual, and I am too lazy to check myself...

I too want to get rid of the unnecessary clutter.

I know there are relays for the horn, lights, cruise control and choke system there though.

Instead of a "Rats Nest Removal" tutorial, I would LOVE for someone to explan what each of those things does, and how could they be safely removed (if possible).

I had Sterling switch my carb over to be a mechanical choke system, instead of the stock automatic choke shut off. Does this mean that I can remove that silver thing if it is part of the stock choke equipment? My choke is purely cable operated now. Is that part of the equipment that works with the automatic choke then??

That's your A/C Drain hose. That's how it looks from the factory.

Damn dude, read the wiring diagram. :p: Im too tired to go look it up right now. Maybe in the morning. :D The hose is the drain for the A/C condensate. If the A/C evaporator is gone, you dont need it.

The oscillator is what makes the annoying beeping noise when your radiator is low or you leave your lights on.

Okay everyone. This is a team effort because I know you all have a crapload of wires under the hood like I do. :D What is the stupid oscillator for? It really needs to come out of there.... Mainly because I'm too lazy to fix it. Its easier to just rip stuff out, and it looks better and simpler too... :D

ill study as well, maybe with carls help, the 2 of us could come up with a write up on what to and not to keep depending on mods or stock stuff like ac, choke, ect.

btw sterling, i hear no buzzer if my lights are left on :(

FBDrifter, check your fuses? My buzzer doesn't work when one of my fuses is pulled... Don't recall which one.

I can't think of anything the oscillator would be for besides making noises, but don't quote me on that :-)

Carl, i too want to know exactly waht DF and them want to know. I have been too lazy for over a year to take it all out, so, last week i opened up the wiring diagrams.

So far as i can tell, the black one is what makes your X-16 work, the rusted silver one is the M-28, and the oscilator is L-12.

Now, here'es the problem. THAT MEANS NOTHING TO ME!!! if they gave a KEY then that might help. but i looked thru the entire wiring chapter, as wellas the one before, the one after, the revisions part in the back of the book, and the intro. No keys, no explination of the numbers.
So i gave up and drank a soda.

Also one for the GSL-SE's would be nice..:D

sweet thread guys, I hope everyone figures it out. I know the gslse bay's seem to have quite a bit more crap in them. One day it would be nice to have a superclean hidden wire engine bay like the Aussies do it!

OK here's what i've taken out so far tonite, and i'm pretty sure its all gonna be workin right in the mornin:

take out the "main relay" which is the two round ones w/ the rubber covers. You can also take out the other two round ones. You are now left with 3 things. One of them a large gold ovalish one (shown in the very top pic), a black one (shown in the top pic), and another ovalish gold one. You can remove the smaller ovalish gold one (it only has one plug coming out of it).

The two pictured in the very top post ARE required. The gold one is the check relay for all the interior lights i believe, and the other one is for .... somethin else i dont remember.

anyways, i'm PRETTY SURE this is correct, for a CARBED GSL-SE that is not using any of the stock emissions/fuel injection computer system.

Thats the problem Im running into. Every model/year is slightly different. They all have slightly different setups, and many of the relays look identical. :( This is gonna be a PITA.

probally said before but im too drunk to read... :) the black one is Ac relay, the silver one is choke / check relay (makes idiot lights come on at start uup and go out when alt charges) the oscillator is for the noise you hear when your oil level is low, or coolant level is low....

ok that black one is NOT the ac relay i figured that out... the ac relay is what those 2 wires with the thick rubber plugs are on in the second pic, those wires run to the ac relay, as far as i know it was screwed to the strut tower on my car, could be different on another car.

im currently removing wires left right and center from the harness for MY purpose, ill post a full writeup when im finished and take pictures if i can.

the MAIN harness that comes outa the driverside firewall is gonna me fun :( havent gotten to it yet. but interior, and emissions has been stripped to bare minums

ok i missread your first post or something, on my car theres 2 black relays like that. one is for ac and im not sure what the other one is for exactly i havent had a chance to go over it.

I disconnected the "main relay" and it disabled my entire ignition system!!

So you need the black box, the "check relay", and the main relay....

See, its different for every car tho. so this isnt very fair to those trying to figure it out. My car is different from other 85's... i donno why but it just is.

So pretty much disregard everything i said before. Again, sorry guys for the bad information!!!
