MI Replacing cat with mid pipe 86 N/A

Hello, I just bought an 86 GXL and it has a good sized hole in the main cat which is causing the car to be very loud and allowing some exhaust gasses to stink up the inide of the car.

At the moment I cannot afford to buy a new replacement cat.

I found this mid pipe on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_2725wt_941

I was hoping to be able to use that for a temporary fix seeing as it's cheap and doesn't appear to be too poorly constructed. One issue I'm noticing is that the length of the pipe is only 17" long and the stock cat is 17.5" long.

My question is will this work? And what, if anything am I going to have to do to make this fit and not leak?

Any help is very appreciated.

Most ebay stuff of that nature is crap. The car will be pretty loud with a pipe there.

You can get a new cat from rx7.com for $315 here:
http://rx7.com/store/rx7/fcexhaust.html

Or you can try and get a good used one here on the forum but given the age of these cars I would think that new is better.

I'll wait for one of the FC guys to chime in with further info.

There should be enough play in the catback for a 17" pipe to fit.

I agree that the car will be very loud. And if the resonator is glass-packed, it will only last a few hours.

I say go for it. Nobody's going to notice one more slightly louder than usual car driving around in the Detroit area. And I don't know that a cat would quiet an exhaust system that much anyway.

Welcome aboard. If you plan to autocross, maybe I'll see you at the races...

Thanks everyone.

I looked at the RX7.com cat, but at the moment $315 isn't possible for me.

I'm not too worried about it being loud, right now it looks like the cat was gutted by the previous owner and it has about a 2x4 hole that's rusted into it, so it's very loud as is.

If this ebay pipe lasts a month then it will have done it's job.

Thanks for all the replies!
