Thx guys, Thx Felix & Thx Mazda
Hello,
I've been lurking for about 5 months now. I'm trying to remember when I learned about rotary engines. I think it was in the early '80s reading Popular Science. I did an 8th grade science project where I built a (wood) model of a rotary engine and tried to explain it's "revolutionary" impact on the internal combustion engine...I got a "B" since I overestimated my audience's understanding of the term "internal combustion engine"... since they (and probably most eighth graders) didn't understand a regular otis piston engine..
. trying to explain the rotary in comparison was quite a tall order...Mrs. Boris told me I should have built another model of a piston engine to compare them. My first thought was "why... they're pretty much simple and lame...this is cool...
"
Long story short, I've never been next to a Rx7 where I didn't turn down my radio, open a window and listen to them drive off to hear that rotary purr. Can't figure out why I never got one before. I'm very mechanically inclined and love "unique" machines. (I also was a little disappointed with the 2nd generation body style, no offense... it looked kind of "Porchey"...I was happy when the Saturn SC2s carried the torch.. I bought one for my then-wife and always said "it looks like an old Rx7...")
I've been looking for a "beater" Rx to replace my (probably not the best decision) GTI for the last few months...scanned Craigslist, Ebay & Autotrader constantly. I never found the "match" until yesterday. (The last 4 cars I've bought have all been silver...)
Today I gave a guy a deposit on a silver '85 GSL with (really) 38,400 miles on it. I'm picking it up in 10 days. His mom bought it new and she drove it 2 miles to work everyday until about 10 years ago when he put it in his garage and drove it once a week. This one ain't a beater...
I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate all of the knowledge contained in this forum and how much help it is going to be. (and already has been)
Thanks guys. The pix get posted after I drive it home...
