Putting a GSL-SE Rear end into an 83 GS

Does anyone know if it is worth it to try to find a GSL-SE Rear end and put it into a GS? Will it fit easily? Secondly, would I have to switch rims since it is a different bolt pattern? If so, how to I switch the front end to match? Is it worth it, or should I just find a used GSL-SE to work on instead? Of course there is the next question of "can you put a 13b into an 83GS? I just can't stand the 84-85 interior. I just happen to like the 81-83 better. I'm interested in anyone's opinions on all of the above...

Yes, you will get bigger brakes and a lower rear gear.

Will it fit easily?
Yes it bolts right in, don’t forget the emergency brake cables.

Secondly, would I have to switch rims since it is a different bolt pattern?
Yes. You would need se rims or aftermarket ones.

You just bolt it in. The entire strut assembly and the spindle and brake assy.

That is entirely up to you. The SE weighs more but has a 13b. And I personally love Fuel injection, such as it is in a SE

Of course there is the next question of "can you put a 13b into an 83GS?
Yep, but you would be advised IMO to start with an SE to save time and money.

I just can't stand the 84-85 interior. I just happen to like the 81-83 better. I'm interested in anyone's opinions on all of the above...
I think it would be a whole bunch easier to put a 83 interior in a SE than a 13b and SE suspension in a 83.

It is up to you how you want to go about it.

Hadn't thought of doing the reverse.... changing out the interior instead.... Is the wiring all the same? For the gauges and climate contol boxes? I would imagine the ducting is different?

Completely different. It can be done. I went put an 85 into an 81 years ago.

The best way is to use the ENTIRE dash, including the support metal behind it. A/C? I don't know. I kept the old 3 speed from the 81 to keep it simple for me.

Personally...
WHAT?! the 84/85 dash (in good condition) looks great even today (17 years later). It was significantly ahead of its time. The 79-83 looks more dated by my opinion.

It's your car though, do what you want. I guess that's what colors and flavors are for...to please everyone's tastes.

He's right. It made all the difference for me. I just used a Haynes Manual. with the wiring diagrams. 85% of the work was done at the main plugs.
