Obviously I'm new to this forum so I guess I'll introduce myself first. I just bought my first car which happens to be a non turbo 88 rx7 and I absoulutly love it. She's a little rough and doesn't run all that well but occasionally I'll get a little taste of the power that the motor can actually make. I don't know too much about cars and basicly if theres anyone in the medicine hat/calgary/southern alberta area who could help me figure out whats wrong with my car, I would really appreciate it. Not someone who will just do it for me, but someone who will work with me to firgure it out. I just want to learn as much as I can about my car. I have some mechanical experience (with motorcycles) but am a little bit of a newb to cars. I'm willing to give you some cash, or buy lunch and or bring the beer to anyone who's in the area and willing. Thanks a lot!

 

Im fairly familiar with S4 N/A's, so perhaps I could be of some assistence. I had an 86' GX that I learned quite intimately. I have a couple extra spare parts too if nessesary.

feel free to post up the symptoms in more detail here too.

 

well lets see, symptoms include:

-rough and slightly high idle
-irratic idle
-much less power from the motor then there should be, (sometimes worse than otheres)
-classic rx7 engine hesitation
-at highway speeds when turning to the right there is a horrable vibration through the steering wheel and it sounds and feels like the wheel is going to fall off
-when you really get on it and try to shift into second, it won't let you as you hear the gears grinding (yes I'm pushing the clutch all the way in)
-struts and springs DONE
-brakes DONE
-various extremly anoying radles here and there through out car


thats all I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll think of more later

 

the highway speed thing is more then likely a wheel bearing.

the hard shift into 2nd is the synchros in the tranny.

rattles are inside or outside the car? outside then probably bushings and such are bad.. cehck sway bar bushins and end links for sure

 

how much regular tune up and replacing wear items have you done?
the first thing to do is to make sure all fluids, etc. are replaced along with the various filters. the TPS also has to be checked for proper operation. this eliminates basic problems from improper maintenance/adjustment, then you will have and easier time identifying what is wrong.

you can download the Factory Service Manual (links in the FAQ) which has instructions on adjusting your Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). that might go a long way to fix idle/hesitation issues.
