Signs of blown apex seal

First, Apex Seal = Tips on rotors, right?

What are some signs that the apex seal might be broken? When I started the car for the first time in a few months (my first time ever starting it) a huge cloud of smoke came out of the tailpipe. The smoke died off after about 30 seconds and as I took it for a drive around the block the smoke was still coming out but just a small amount (barely visible while driving). I only drove 1.2 miles. Does this sound like a broken apex seal?

I have the same problem!!! When I start it, or rev over 5G it smokes clouds Its an o-ring seal iside the motor, or rarely on the intake A blown apex seal, You WOULD KNOW, It will barley stay slive, or plain out die So I think its just a o-ring. LATERZ
ANdrew
oh yeah, you would need to rebuild the engine, or new gasket might have the o-ring. But i am not sure, just no its by the rotor

You usually loose power when an Apex is broken. A Rotary with bad oil seals can smoke like a mosquito fogger and still have excellent compression and power.

I was for sure I was the only one who had a problem. I am glad I am not alone in my sufferage

I've never drivin an 7 before this one so I'm not sure about the power but it seemed to perform just fine, chirped from 1-2 and 2-3. Never took it past 5k rpm.

You must have some shitty tires or a real good clutch on there if you chirped from 2-3 on a 5k shift. You definitely haven't blown your apex seals, I wouldn't worry about a little smoke. All rotaries smoke a little bit on a cold start, I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets excessive.

the way to diagnose a broken/blown apex seal is to do a compression test. but it will severly hurt the power output as well as drivability.

The tires are actually in really good conditon they are Perelli's, Maybe I have a new clutch? I don't really know much history about the car. All I know is I chirped em on the 2-3 shift might have been at 5.5k?

Stupid question, is the apex seal the tehplon rotor tips?

I can scratchem going from 2-3 with 5 K RPM"S , I have really crappy tires(dry-rot) and they are P-205/40<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<</13 mounted on enkie rims, Then they are all mounted with Anti theft, lugs, YOU KNOW the kind that you have to have the special tool to take them off So until I can find another set (I LOOKED EVERYWHERE) I am screwed! But I cant bitc because the car only cost me 170 and about 480 so far!!! I am pleased until I can leagally drive LATERZ, Andrew

the apex seals are a steel or carbon material. similar to piston rings.

You should try to put in some ATF in the spark plugs and crank it for good 5 minute {do not start engine just crank it} and let it sit over night and then removed the old spark plugs and installed new one. then start it up and let it run for 20 minute and then go driving. this method wake's up the o-rings which is rubber after these sit for a while like couple months the o-ring lose it's tightnes. Also if u think your apex seal was bad the car would never idle normal or if it's broken it will ceased the engine. good luck.

Why can't I chirp? My car is an automatic, maybe that has something to do with it.......

BTW: what is a safe RPM range to rev the car before you take off. (put in drive, hold brake and gas, let go of brake.....etc.) Or I could just describe it as a Drag racing launch, because my car creaks and moans a little when I do that and it's making me think something is going to break.

Sounds like a good way to blow up a stock torque convertor to me. Aren't the automatics only 3-speeds? I doubt you'd be able to chirp in anything but a fast start from a stop sign. I may be wrong... just my opinion.
