Is my transmission/gearbox gone?

Today while driving to pick up my g/f after helping a fellow 7 owner install his RB catback..my tach completely goes dead. Im like..wtf..figured I'd take a look once I get home after picking the g/f up. Then I smell something burning, so I pull over immediatly.

Upon inspection under the car, right below the shifter there is some kinda of liqiud getting burnt up on the exhaust. The liquid was dripping on the ground, and is clear. My first thought's is that its gotta be the gearbox or the tranny itself. If I remember correctly the tranny was supposed to be rebuilt.

Does this sound right to you guys?? What could be wrong? Bad seals? Bad tranny/gearbox?? I dunno..luckily I was 10 minutes from a family mechanics shop and I didnt have to drive TOO far. Thanks guys. BTW I DID SEARCH "bad transmission" but a lot of thread pertaining to swapping, and bad syncro's. Thanks.

The speedo cable attaches to the side of the transmission. Look to see see if it is attached, or if that is where the leak is coming from. If not, a more specific location of the leak would be helpful.

Don't panic, just yet. It may not be a big deal.
