It's the same paper material as used on 13Bs etc. I should know because it sucked scraping it off.

the rx8 gasket is metal, and works, with a little trimming. the newer engines have the metal gasket and no spot for the o-ring. earlier engines have the o ring and paper gasket.

you can use the metal gasket on an o ringed engine but you still need the o ring

Mazda comp sells metal versions of both the FC/20B and the FD front cover gaskets. Very nice I must say, no trimming needed.

 

My 20B D507 has a metal one, I just saw that today. All my 13B REs had paper gaskets though.

 

Mazda Comp sells a 20b gasket that is metal. Picture has the gasket that I ordered, it is indeed metal and fits 13rew for sure.

they arent. sometime after 95 they switched from papre to metal.

 

Well here is the thing, you are not incorrect. They came with a paper gasket just like the third gen came with paper intake gaskets, yet when replacing these said gaskets they are now metal. Most gaskets on anything in the mid 90's has been replaced with metal with exceptions.

Mazda is like a water head when it comes to this, they have these metal gaskets for the 20b, yet if you order for a third gen or second gen s5 they are still paper, however the 20b gasket is identical, and cheaper

Sorry I did not explain this in the last post.......It was like 1:30 and I just got home from the shop.
