As far as I know(I could be wrong) its 6 feet away from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle at 3000 rpms.

Really I read that it has to be 6 feet away and 3 feet to the side which would be a 45 degree angle. The only part I wasent sure about was the rpm but if memory serves me it was 3000. If you have new info that would be helpfull I would love to read it.

I read a lot

Wow. They screwed up. I actually read a artical in a mag that was all about smog laws and ways around them. At the end they listed all the laws so you could bust cops chops when they did things wrong. Like for example its illegal for a officer to give you a ticket for your exhaust being to loud. With out a decible meter to tell them its to loud. Thats why they give modified exhaust tickets instead. All though i have seen it done.

The law has been changed or clarified recently, specifically with regards to sound measurement. I'm sure you could find this info by calling the CHP (they're in the phone book), or searching on google.
