Picking up my first FC tomorrow

I'm excited! It needs a whole lot of TLC, but I think it will turn out to be a great car. Needs full exhaust and suspension, paint, and the seats could use new leather.

I searched around here for a bit and found the Racing Beat exhaust system, which is what I'll probably end up getting. The engine sounds healthy, but the exhaust is rusted through. Clutch has also seen better days. The suspension needs replaced, but that can wait a little while. I'll probably do the body work (passenger front fender is dented) and paint her before winter gets here.

Any suggestions on preventative maintenance?

What are some good sites for parts? I have already checked out mazdatrix.com

welcome and congrats on the car!

as far as preventive care goes, knowlege is power! if you dont already fully understand how the rotary engine works, now is a good time to find out.
the oil and cooling systesms are important in our cars. make sure that everything in those systems works properly. you didnt mention what year the car was, and that makes a difference with the temp gauge.
i would reccomend changing all fluids and filters. as far as oil goes, dont use synthetic unless it is reccomended for rotary(ie idemitsu, royal purple)i would reccomend using the mazda oem oil filter.
changing plugs and wires wont hurt either.
if you are uncomfortable or unsure doing these things yourself, take the car to someone who KNOWS ROTARY!!
good luck and happy rotoring!!

i want a s5 coupe

and ya, like what everyone else said

do a compression check just for ***** and giggles, this will give you an outlook on how much time roughly the engine has, how many miles does it have on it already??

spark plugs, cables, oil change, filters....yada yada yada

Yep, its a 91 with 140k miles. I'll be flushing all the fluids this weekend. Looks like I've got a lot of searching to do on this board, lol. I'm leaning towards the RB springs & sways since they offer a package deal and have decent springrates from what I've seen. I'm trying to find the best way to get this thing inspected without spending $450 on a new cat.

Dude I live in Raleigh NC. You won't have to pass emissions starting in January--no sniffer test anymore. If you really need a hookup on inspection right now I might be able to help you out. Check out the "Saturdays in Raleigh NC" thread in the Southeast Forum. We have a pretty active local group of rotorheads.

I recommend a full Racing Beat exhaust system. I'm happy with mine, and i have an 88 nonturbo. Since you presumably are on the original motor (stock ports) you probably won't see much of a gain from getting the header instead of the downpipe, but it will be louder.

I know a guy who can get you a really good paint job too, but it's gonna cost you more than Maaco. For suspension I have Eibach pro-kit lowering springs and Tokico HP/Blue shocks. I definately noticed much less body roll with this setup.

I wouldn't do anything to it untl you have done a full tune-up and flushed the fluids and compression tested it. you don't want to dump 1000 bucks into suspension then find out that you need a rebuild or something.....

Change fluids, spark plugs, belts and coolant hoses (heater hoses as well).

Congrats, you're going to have fun during those brief moments of actually driving it between when you're doing something or other to it. xD

Lucky S5 bastard, don't have to go and hunt for S5 front bumper/tail lights like us S4 people lol.

Don't stick s5 stuff on your s4... have some pride man!! :P

In my opinion, s4 tail lights look better than s5's. But, hey, everyone has an opinion. Do whatcha like.

Actually I have been growing more and more attached to the S4 tail lights but I still like the style of the S5 front bumper more so than the S4.
