how to test gas gauge or fuel sender

My gas gauge or fuel sendor is not working, although once in a while the gauge will show I have some gas but is not accurate.

I cleaned the connections on the top of the sender but the problem persists. (I am sick of guessing how much gas I have in the tank by my milage, also I ran out of gas today.)

How can I determine if it is one or the other? Can I use a voltometer (or whatever they are called).

I can't even get the screws off, for the sender, as they are all rusty.

Fricken sputters and stalls. Gettin mad at the new car, get out, everythings fine, all good. Get in start it up. Guage shows E. Bag the crap out of it 5 blocks to the gas station, put 10bucks in - just fine. Sure glad I didnt blow anything. grrr. Also, I have noticed a small filler tube?leak which really sux. anyone know the part # or where I can get new rubber I think it is for the filler tube?

my guage showed different levels too, i removed the fuel tank and took out the level thingie and cleaned the rust off of it,(be very gentle cleaning, the small coil windings, break easy) and now its working fine,,,not a hard job, took only a couple of hours, shorter than walking to the gas station thou......good luck,,,,,
