I am thinking of buying a 1987 Rx-7 with[list=1][*]170,000 Miles[*]Paint is Some what dead with a little rust [*]Interior Is good[*]13B rotary ( i'm not sure what that means)[*]5-speed [*] $1800obo[/list=1]

How mch should I offer , is ths a good price??

Hmmmm.....not too bad a price but....I only paid $2000.00 for my '87 TII and it had new Mazda motor with 50 K on it. Paint was dead, body straight, and interior needed paint, carpet, headliner, and a thorough cleaning. So i'm thinking more like $1300.00 for the car you described. Also be aware of a high mileage rotary engine...you might want a compression test befor you buy it.

13b rotary refers to the engine. a 1.3 liter rotary engine...are you new to rotary engines?

compression tests will tell you if the engine is still good. when the apex seals wear out or get stuck u get crappy compression. a compression test can cost from 40-100 bucks....mazda does a full inspection of the car for $180.

 

The only reason I'd buy an RX-7 with that many miles for that price is if the rest of the car was in *pristine* shape.

Surely for that price you can find a nicer one.

yeah I knew that was refering to the engine but i have heard of a 13a and a 13b rotary engine.... I think Imight need to get a compression test done ,, but i dont want to spend that much on the car, and have the results come back bad ..

seller says the drive terain is in excellent condition
I havnt test drove it yet ,, is there anything i could do when test driving it to make sure the engine is in good cond.

there is a 12a engine....only in first gen rx7s
the 13b is in secondgen rx7s

definatly get a compression test...
make a deal with the owner...if the comp test comes out bad u both pay half....if it comes out good u pay the full amount

se iff the car revs nicely to 6000rpm.....also check out arron cakes write up on buying a rx7...anyone got the link to his site?
