will a 2nd gen tranny fit into a 83 gsl?

hi,
I also have a 83 gsl with a bad clutch... I was wanting to know if a 2nd gen 5speed will work in it...the reason is, that i drive that one on the interstate alot and was wanting to bring the rpm's down some... or should i just keep whats in it... I thought i would try to swap them when i installed the clutch! ???

Personally I would look for a GSL-SE transmission but here is a link that should answer most of your questions.

hmmm...thanks for the link.... but i guess it would be better to find a gsl-se tranny....im kinds dumb on those gear ratio things... so if i dont find a gsl-se what about useing 84-85 12 tranny...from what i could tell it mite drop rpm down some???? and what would i look for to find out the diffrence between knowing what the tranny looks like??? i know what the 2nd gen looks like because i have one of those...dose the 84-85 have more electronic hook ups???

Electrical hookups, its a manual transmission why would a 'SE have more.
The 2 on all 81-85 transmission are for Reverse lights and the second is to send a signal to the carburetor that its in 5th gear.

The GSL-SE transmission has 2 vents instead of 1.

BTW, the lower the number of the gear ration the slower the wheels will be turing at a spec RPM.
