Who owns a 79 or 80?

Who owns a 79 or 80 and your car smokes alot at red line. Car doesnt smoke till I hit red-line and shift. I can shift hard with no smoke till I go further that 6500.

I head the the 79 and 80 do tend to smoke more than others, but I was just wondering what others experienced?

I have an '80 with the original motor with 160k on it and it doesn't smoke unduly (yet). What you describe sounds like the oil control rings are allowing some oil to bypass during high vacuum conditions. This usually gets progressively worse until the car won't start because the plugs keep fouling. This usually happens in motors that are nearing the end of their lifetime, or in "rebuilds" where the side housings were not lapped properly.

Yeah, definitely sounds like oil control rings. One of my friends has the same problem. It's pretty funny to see the huge cloud of smoke come out. *POOF*

I'm guessing it looks something like this? http://brianmcd.no-ip.com/Videos%20By%20Me/Poof.wmv . That's my friend's 85 GS doing a flybye on me lol. The smoke lingers for quite a while.

Matt just stated (as he looks over my shoulder) that his '79 doesn't smoke @ all...

The most likely cause of this problem is the same as that of smoking on startup, but at an advanced stage of oil seal deterioration. There is no fix short of a rebuild, but some transmission sealer added to your engine oil might stall the need to rebuild for a period of time. Don't count on it.

I have a totalled '80 in the driveway....bbuuutttttt, keep your revs down from here on out if this car is your daily driver, it's at the door. Poofs of smoke after the car has warmed up is not normal for a 12A, period. I had a '79 that did the same thing, too, until the day came when it smoked non-stop. Started out small got worse, then one day, it wouldn't start period. She's dead, Jim! Dammit, Bones! ;D
