Angry Car Shut Down And Turns Over But Would Not Start

I purchase the car 3 weeks ago,the car was running fine, but yesterday I went to the store and when I came out, the car would not start,I tow it to my house where I checked the carburator(good gas flow) and the spark at the spark plugs wires, and did not have spark at the t1 and t2 plugs but had good spark at L1,L2 plugs a friend sugested to replace the module which we did with no good results,so we replaced the primary ignition coil with the same result THE CAR IS AN 85 RX7 WITH 12A CARBURATED ENGINE.

ANY SUGESTIONS WOULD BE APRECIATED.

??

So you've concluded that your trailing plugs are not firing. I'm wondering if it might be your trailing ignitor has got fried - does your tach operate when you're cranking the motor?

I would think that your car should start on leading only, but not run all that well. Could it be that you've flooded the motor in your efforts to start the car, combined with the trailing ignition problem?

How?
Check your fuses; specifically, the fuel pump fuse.
Can you see the site glasses on the carb? Kinda hard to see the one by the dash, but you can see the forward one. The fuel level should be no more than half way.

You say you just got it, and you have only one post. I'll assume you don't have alot of experience with rotaries?
Pull the plugs and see if they are wet with fuel. If they are'nt dry, it's flooded.

Are you getting spark at the trailing coil?

Good to see you back, sterling... It sounds like ignitor problems, but if it is indeed flooded, this should help...

Almost Ultimate Flooded 12A Thread...

Hope that helps, carb'd rotaries are notorious for flooding...

THANKS TO ALLFOR THE INFO

SILVERROCKET, we are unexperienced with the vehicle but to answer SILVERROCKET"S question, no the tach does not operate when cranking the motor and yes it is very possible the engine is flooded by now, and where is the trailing ignitor located.

STERLING, the fuel level is good but if it is flooded what do I need to do. I did pull the plugs and they were wet with gasoline.

NORTHERN7, no I am not getting spark at the trailing coil and that is the one I replaced.

MAR3, I really appreciate the info, looks like I need to do some reading.

I REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S HELP.

I'm betting that your problem is a failed trailing ignitor. The ignitors (one leading and one trailing) are located on the distributor. They're very expensive new; most people get them in junkyards and stuff. I think Mazdatrix sells used but tested ignitors, not sure of the price (www.mazdatrix.com)

I don't think your trailing ignition coil is likely to be the problem. You should return that coil to the store and get a refund (hopefully you didn't scratch it too much installing it).

I don't know too much about this trailing ignitor problem because I've never had it - but it's quite common. Use the "search" button on this forum to find more information - there should be lots.

Yup, the engine is flooded which is a problem unto itself. As posted above, there is a plethora of information on deflooding a rotary - no point in me going into it right here.

So as I see it, you've determined that you have no fuel issue, you most definitely have an ignition issue which in my limited knowledge of this area points strongly to the trailing ignitor, and you've flooded your motor as a secondary concern.

So I would recommend using the search button and reading up on both testing for and replacing a failed trailing ignitor, and getting your car deflooded.

Good luck!

EDIT:

I have the Haynes manual in my hands. There is a fairly simple procedure to test the ignitors, however it requires wiring up a test lamp and a switch in a certain way to the various terminals on the ignitor. I don't have a scanner and I'm not sure I can describe it that well. I think you need to see the picture.

Can someone scan it in?

I highly recommend buying the Haynes manual anyways, it's a necessary purchase (not as good as the Mazda one but way cheaper).

So yes... my revised recommendation is to get this picture and go outside and test the ignitor!
