Hks T04-e Imput Please ~

Hows the power? I read that it is around 300 - 350 rwhp at 15psi with the right tune. Is spool very quick and does it peak out or hold till 9? I'm just guessing the T04-E's don't come with a custom hotside they all come standard. Also is the T04-E ball bearing or just it's brothers...

Thanks
Joe

There are several variants of this turbine, (that HKS sold with their kits)the to4e 57trim with a .70 divided housing w/"O" trim wheel, the 57trim with a .84 divided hsg and "P" trim wheel

the "O" trim .70 hsg spools extremely fast, but peters out around 7K , its great for a daily driver with a some extra oomph.

the "P" trim .84 spools a little slower, but is better on the top end losing it around 8~8.5k.

either one is great for a street car but with the current bigger is better might be considered too small by some people.

I used one for a while on my 7, but ended upgrading to a slightly larger turbo about 2 months ago (62-1) for track use, the competition was just to stiff for the tracks and classes I run, and needed some more hp to stay competetive.

Thanks man

I definitely keep an eye out for both but if I can go I'll go with the P.

What mod's do you really need to run this setup? Are stock injectors fine? I'm probably going to order a PFC and a walboro 255 do you think that will be enough or are bigger injectors a must?

850's are going to prime... 1300's will have to step up.

I have a T04E .60 inlet and .96AR exhaust with a P trim bought from phoenix turbos. And i dynoed 406rwhp and 446nm of torque at 14 psi. This was done on a Roto Test, wich is similar to a dynapac but is supposed to be more accurate.

AF ratio was between 11.5 and 12. But verry rich in the lower rpm range and pree boost. Starts to boost at about 2400 rpm. So im verry happy with that turbo. But going bigger turbo next year, due to back pressuer in exhaust system and i want more HP at the same boost lvl's.

Thanks man, I doubt I'll be able to squeeze that much power out of 850/1200 injectors and running either a walboro or if that doesn't cut it a supra pump.

I had the HKS O-trim and it spools very fast but falls on its face over 7K RPM.

It was perfect for Autocrossing and O.K. for track days as well as being really well suited for daily driving / short bursts on the street.

I am in the process of switching to a GT35R with a .82 trim on the turbine and hope to have the same fast spooling for Autocross bit maybe a little more top end, I would like to see it pull hard up to 8K RPM this will make for a better Road Course car which is what I am after.

But, I really liked my T04e it was a great turbo and it pulled really hard and fast down low, when I raced RX7's with bigger turbos I would spool and pull away so fast they would have to use their top end power to catch back up. Eventually the bigger turbo would walk me but I ran out in front at first.

Do you think 350 - 375 rwhp is possible with that setup I have listed? When do you project peak boost to hit with the P trim? Jw when did peak hit on the O trim and how much psi where you pushing?

I thought I read Power FC's do not like the 850 primaries and are hard to tune with them. I may be wrong though.

My peak boost was in the 6700 RPM area. When I Autocrossed I ran 12 PSI and 320-330 RWHP, I rarely ran 15 PSI and the 375-380 RWHP but when I did on road courses it was plenty of power. My fear now is that the power the GT35 puts down may make the car more difficult to drive.

Its not a point and shoot car and I like to be able to add power on at the apex of a turn and have linear power come on not an on off switch. The To4E is a very smooth turbo that makes these cars a lot of fun to drive fast.

*Edit* The boost falls off hard in the 7K RPM range my O-trim just ran out of breath up in the hight RPM range. Hence my switching to the new turbo to see if I can gain about 1300 more RPMS of usable power.

I hope the P trim is more effective at that range then. If the 850's are problematic then what should I go with?

I was running stock primaries and 1300 secondaries. But I am not using a Power Fc.

I am not guru but this might be handy.

http://www.rx7.com/cgi-local/3rdgencalc.cgi

It seems pretty accurate to me because I could get 375 to the wheels with plenty of fuel but when I upped the boost to try for 400 I ran out of fuel. Its telling me I can get 447 to the flywheel I was getting about 430.

I just upgraded to 850 primary and 1300 secondary. I use a Motec M4 though so tuning this will not be a huge issue.

Like I said the 1st time 5 years ago the Power FC had trouble with 850 primaries. So check with the Power FC guys the problem may have been solved.

Well I haven't bought a fuel management system, I know most people prefer the PFC because it;s easy to access maps and it's not insanely expensive. How is the motec and what cost does it run?

Motec = Insanely expensive.

I am liking the Wolf3d system its based off of Motec and looks really good.

Another option is Microtek very budget minded and pretty good quality.

My dad has a Power FC on his fresh engine with stock ports, Pettit upgraded twins, downpipe, cat back, stock fuel, intake and pulley kit and it puts a solid 320 to the wheels. Its very quick and he is very happy with it. Its been setup like this for 3 years now and about 15K miles problem free.

I just did the calc running 550's an 1300's an it read 346rwhp. I plugged it in with 850/1300 and read to 406rwhp. I'm guessing these numbers will be off some due to the fact of single turbo and all but I'm guessing I'm in range. My goal with this setup would be 350 to the wheels comfortably with not to much load as far as the duty cycle goes. I cut down both cycles, Max 80 to 75 and Ecu max 62 - 60 just for a little less load and those were my numbers btw.

I really don't think I would stress even with 550's prime and 1300's secondary with a walboro 255lph supporting them or is a supra pump needed more. Is a fuel pressure regulator needed or can the pfc do that job.

I checked out the motec and yea I'll stick with the pfc haha...

Now i should mention that i had about 350rwhp at min boost. Wich is about 0.8kg wich is about 12 psi. But i also have verry large streetports. So that will help with the hp.

But i would recomend u running a Q trim exhaust housing on the T04E to let it flow better from 7000 rpm and out. My P Trim was dropping in boost from 7000 rpm due to backpressure.

I don't have any good pictures of my setup. But will try and take some pics of it tomorrow.

But im realy happy with the To4E. So im gonna go for a T04Z this time.

I didn't even know there was a Q trim as well. Is that the largest size?

You lucky sob the Z was going to be what I upgrade to next but right now I don't think I'm ready for that kind of power, I'd rather perfect my skills as a driver first.

850cc primaries will be fine on the PFC, just need a good tuner to get a good IDLE. Other than that they're fine. 850cc primaries and secondaries are good for atleast 400rwhp (GoodfellaFD3s had them). I do advise 1,300cc secondaries though just for a safety margin incases of spike or what not.

I really do advise not to use the walbro pump. It's a hit or miss with that pump. I've known guys who have blown motors because those things fail prematurely. I'd run the supra pump to be safe.

NO NO NO, Q trim turbine is way too large for a T04E. Stick to a p trim turbine wheel, get around a 57 or 60 trim compressor wheel in a .6 A/R T04E or .7 A/R T04S front compressor cover (later the better choice). Stick to .81 or .96 A/R non divided turbine housings if you get a non divided manifold, if you get a divided manifold (better choice) get either a .84 or 1.00 A/R turbine housing.

Theres some confusion in this thread, The T04E is a Garrett turbo family, not a specific turbo (Yes HKS sells a GARRETT T04E). It has many size compressor wheels and like ALL T4 based turbos, can come with a range of turbine trims. TRIM is NOT the same thing as compressor cover or turbine housing A/R. Read up on the lingo if you still don't get it.

And another thing. People like to blame their turbo for lack of top end or response etc when it is a lot of the time other parts / and /or factors withen their engine combo/system. I see a lot of blaming turbine A/R or turbine trim for loss of top end when it MOST OF THE TIME is their porting, intake manifolds, boost controller (or lack of), EXHAUST SYSTEM, and just plain running out of compressor.

Any idea which exhaust and compressor trim this T04E has? It's got the divided turbine which you can't see from the picture.

looks like a "P" trim wheel with a .84 exhaust housing. The compressor side no I have no clues unless you measure the wheels major and minor.

Great info

Mine will be the P trim then as its .84 turbine and was on the car when it came from Japan so must be a HKS one.

On my ported engine it gives positive boost at just over 2000rpm and feels strong right until 8000rpm and maybe more but thats where my limiter seems to be set.

My car doesnt really get in to its stride until 4500rpm but that is because its only running 0.95bar at mo so not much boost to increase the midrange torque. I accidently (ie boost controller failed) tried the car at 1.6bar and it FLEW, very very torquey in midrange unlike at low boost, so its certainly not the turbos fault!

So overall, T04E P-trim is not a bad turbo really

What sort of power they good for? 400bhp@fly would be perfect for me, but more the merrier, lol.

What does "P Trim" equate to numerically? Aren't there multiple trim options? This particular unit came with an HKS kit from the RX7 Store a while back.

Thanks in advance for the input.
