I haven't been posting much because I've been wrapped up with organizing duties for Mendocino Rally, but now that's over and I'll be getting back to it.

Found a Turbo-II transmission with bellhousing. The G-Force adapter plate should be here soon too, so we'll see how that all mates up.

In the meantime, I have done a bunch of calculations for the rear end and think I can get about 9" of travel out of it, have neutral handling, and be able to run coilovers. Basically, I'm going to return to using the locations of the original shock towers, but replace them with these:

and notch the wheel well so there's room for a 2.5" spring over the shock. Shocks will be Bilstein 6100's or 7100's - they're cheap and totally reliable.

Right now I have to figure out whether I can salvage the passenger side front trailing arm mount (where the leaf spring used to be). It's bent and I may have to cut it off and redo it. I don't have a plan of attack for that yet as I just realized it was bent a few days ago.

Yes, Wizbang, you can have dibs on the codriving seat, but you may get called into action before then as a test. I'm thinking Idaho 2015 in the Golf, if you're up for it.

Long time since I've updated, but here's the latest:

Before I start any rework on it, I want to make sure the shell is as straight as possible. I can't really do that in my garage without building a whole frame table/jig so I was talking to a local bodyshop about it. They seemed interested, but I hadn't really been pressing them about it (busy with other stuff), and after a few phone chats trying to set up appointments to have them look at it, they finally came back with a definitive, "no, we're not not interested in working on it unless we're doing a full restoration, and if that's the case you'll have to wait a few months until we get this Supra done." (They've been working for several months on a showcar-level restoration on a MkIV Supra that was in an accident.)

While I can understand that from a business perspective, I'm a little annoyed that they didn't just say it right up front. It didn't exactly waste my time or anything (busy with other stuff), but I could have made other plans.

Anyway...now it's headed off to a different bodyshop/fabricator, and we'll see how that goes.

I got a replacement left front wing for it from a guy in NY. The replacement part is somewhat rusty, but it's solid where I need it to be. He also had a rear tailight piece that's really rusty, but since this car doesn't even have one and he threw it in for nearly nothing, I'm not complaining. I can use it for a for a hammerform or fiberglass template. So a couple of cheers for Diego in NY.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but this car is nearly identical to Mk2 Escorts in the chassis design, and there's a lot of collective knowledge and rally fabrication documentation there. Much of the rear-end geometry changes I'm making are coming from that.

Skip the body shops. Go to the race shops. TC Design is in Santa Clara and can do that for you. Highly recommend his shop. Top quality work w/ reasonable prices.

Hm...actually I don't know why it didn't occur to me to talk to Tony, except that he does mostly track stuff and this is a rally car and the cage design is a little different from what he normally does. He does do good work - I'm the NorCal rally scrutineer and look at a lot of cages and his are always top notch.

Yep. Tony's cages are awesome. I reckon most of the local race shops know someone who can check the car over to ensure straightness.

Which org do you scrutineer for? Wouldn't mind attending an event to spectate.

My neighbor used to rally. He still has his 1st gen RX7 but hasn't raced in years.

I scrutineer for RallyAmerica and NASA RallySport (but not NASA ProRacing).

I wonder when your neighbor's car was last out. I only know of two rallyable RX-7's in NorCal; one's been invalidated out (needs major cage update) and hasn't been run since it ran in rallycrosses back in 2002-2005. The other is Whizbang's, which he's been working furiously on but isn't done yet.

Don't know when it was last out. iirc, He said his previous RX7 got wrecked and then he built this one, got too busy with work and it has sat ever since. His name is George.
