Exclamation Advice Guys, Buying from the US

My buddy and I are planning to pick up this 1990 vert from Maryland.

Here's the link:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...STRK:MEBIDX:IT

Any suggestions?
Should we go for it?

This is the tentative plan.
Bid, and win of course. $1000 US takes it, spoke to him on the phone.
Drive to Buffalo, drop our nissan off. Rent a van and a trailer.
Drive down to Maryland.
Pick up RX7.
Drive back up to Buffalo.
Drive across border to Toronto.

We're planning to find a place to get the RX7 inspected and tuned up down in Maryland.
Will we need to register the car to my buddy's driver's license?
What will the border need? Documentation and registration-wise.
Is there anyone who has done this before?

Quick responses guys!
I'm doing lots of homework on this on Thursday.
Planning to head down Friday night to make it for Saturday pick up.

Thanks and thanks!

P.S. He's in the market for a cheap VERT. $1000-1500MAX

Later days,

VDOZA

- The US side of the border will need a copy of the Bill of Sale as well as a copy of the Title at the border crossing.

- The US customs form must be filled out and accompanied by the Bill of Sale and Ownership Papers at least 3 business days before you plan to cross. You need to confirm receipt with the US customs officials after faxing the documents to insure they have what they need. The vehicle will not be eligible for export with out this happening. Check with the crossing to verify business hours, as they only clear vehicles up to a certain time Mon-Fri

- Your friend will need temp insurance in order to drive the car. You will need to arrange this prior to leaving Canada.

- Upon entering Canada you will need to fill out the required customs docs, show a Clearance Recall letter from Mazda Head Office, showing any recalls etc. for the vehicle.

- You will also be required to pay Fedral Tax and Import Customs Duty Fees at this point (The duty is due because the car origionated outside of the US and Canada, ie Japan)

- Provincial tax you get to pay upon registration of the vehicle.

- If the vehicle has AC you will also pay a surcharge for this.

- Don't worry about RIV as your car is exempt.

To make it easy on yourself, bring a print out of the Ebay transaction, a copy of the blue book value, as well as a print out from Autotrader for the area purchased of any like vehicles, they will hassle you on the value as it is directly related to the rate of tax, so keep that in mind.

Hope that helps. If I was your friend I would buy locally, or at least in Canada to avoid the hassle. After fees, taxes, transport expenses, travel costs, etc. if it is worth it to him, and If the road trip appeals to you guys then go for it.

In any case good luck!

Thanks!

I guess we'd better take a step back and time this all out.

"If I was your friend", we are friends by default! We both are rotary powered drivers!

Thanks for the info and support!

I picked up my 2nd FD in Virginia. We did Ottawa to there and back in 25 hours. It was well worth it.

Best thing to do, is to rent a U-haul car trailer. It was $50 per day.
That way you don't need to worry about any insurance or temp permits for US states.

The procedure is exactly like Fortune has stated.

It needs to be noted that US Customs needs the Original Title, not just a copy. I had the owner courier it to the border.

US customs took maybe 15 mins. They just stamp a few forms, and send you on your way.

I paid 6.1% duty, 5% GST and $100 AC charge at Canadian Customs.

UHaul may be a little sticky to allow you to pull a Car dolly with another car.
It has to do with the Tongue weight and the Towing capacity.
I'd be getting a Truck with a Good Class FIVE(?) on it.( I am not UP on Hitches),.OR rent the Uhaul Truck and dolly Combo and sue both to get the car.
All I know is that Uhaul was not gonna let us tow an Rx7 Behind a S10,until we showed the People that it was a High rated Towing capacity Hitch, and the car was far from the Maximum rating.
Good Luck to ya,

If the Altima is rated to tow anything, max would likely be 1000lbs. Your car and trailer would be nearly 3x that, and that's way too much load on engine and especially transmission. Quite aside from the fact the Altima's brakes would be severely taxed to stop double it's normal weight. A truck or suv with a transmission oil cooler would be needed - Honda Ridgeline or Nissan Frontier or their SUV equivalents would probably be the smallest I would consider using

uhaul is pretty sticky, they will not rent any trailer if you are using a ford explorer either.
