Exclamation Tech support and repairs for 30-1800 Series1 EMS ending Dec 31, 2014

FYI, the clock is ticking if you need help or repairs for a Series1 RX-7 plug-and-play EMS:
AEM Performance Electronics Support - Series 1 EMS Technical Support Ending | AEM

AEM has been offering a tradeup credit towards the purchase of the new Infinity-6 ECU, call for exact pricing . I've been told the tradeup cost will probably increase in 2015 and they may eventually quit giving any credit for old ECUs. My RX-7 was used as one of the development mules for rotary support on the Infinity-6, so if anyone has questions about that please let me know.

Thanks for the info. I think it is a bad move on their part with all the competition out there. I have personally ran the series 1 ecus with great luck. I agree it is a old unit but there are lots of them out there still working great and not to mention the only pnp they offer for the rx7 directly is this unit.

I wonder what the trade-in credit #'s look like. I wouldn't mind something a bit newer.

Do you know if the Infinity supports uploading/converting older maps?

I went from a V1 to a V2 in my supra and had to completely retune it. it wouldn't convert the map. it wasn't too hard though. set the break points to be the same and then copy and paste timing and fuel maps. then work on cold start/idle stuff.
wasn't a huge deal, but wasn't as easy as i thought it would be.

not sure how it is on the infinity though.

From what I was told, discontinuing support for the oldest boxes was to free up resources for helping people who have the newest units. Our RX-7 plug-and-play boxes got discontinued years ago due to slow sales, and there are subtle but important differences that make it difficult for AEM staff to stay familiar with the oldest standalones (using software 10+ years old and getting discontinued), the generation after that (Series2 which are 5+ years old but still supported), and the newest generation (Infinity, just a couple years old) all at the same time.

You can definitely copy the ignition map and ignition split map, we did that on my car and the dyno curves were nearly identical between the EMS and Infinity at wastegate spring pressure. The ignition split map for trailing coils no longer uses negative numbers, so if you want the trailing coils to fire 10 degrees after the leadings, punch in '10' in the table (not -10 like the old boxes). The Infinity's fuel map is handled different, so you won't be able to use the exact same numbers but you can probably copy general trends such as the VE map will be similar to the engine's torque curve (with larger numbers at 5000-6000 RPM than at 8000 RPM with stock ports). The idle settings are similar for the most part, if using the stock idle valve you could copy the Idle Duty % vs Target numbers and Idle Base Target RPM numbers.

It's easier to review data and make changes between dyno pulls. With AEMPro and AEMLog, you had to switch between programs when tuning, find the RPM and boost in the log, then decide what changes to make, then switch back to AEMPro and find the right cell in the map and make the adjustment. The Infinity software that you use for tuning also has datalog plots on it; all the maps and tables are all sync'd to active cell based on what you're seeing in the log, so as you scroll through the datalog it is also highlighting whatever cell the ECU was using.

For fueling, retuning the fuel-related parts of the map aren't too bad. The software calculates a suggested 'NewVE' based on the Target Lambda, Actual Lambda, and any Lambda Feedback that was active at the time. So if your AFR target was 11.0 but the actual AFR was 10.5 and feedback was removing 3% fuel, the ECU will suggest what number you can punch into the VE table so the engine should hit your target AFR with zero feedback during the next pull. Most skilled tuners are good at doing this in their heads, but letting the software do the math and show you the number before you even have a chance to compare target vs actual makes the process easier. It can be hard to think clearly in the loud and stressful environment of a dyno session.

I'm a geek and like datalogging. The new ECU can store logs directly to a USB flash drive. A little 4GB drive is included, it can fit hours of data, even logging 50+ channels at 100Hz which is insane overkill. I'm trying not to sound like a fanboy here, but I'll see if I can grab some screenshots or post a few logs to let you guys see for yourselves.

No idea about tradeup price, probably best to call but I can ask and see if they're OK with posting that sort of thing online. The ECU connectors don't plug into an RX-7 and AEM doesn't have an RX-7 specific adapter harness so you would need to make one or get one. I imagine EFI & wiring guys like EB Turbo, Ludwig Motorsports, Banzai could offer something. Boomslang Wiring could probably do it, but I think it's nice to support rotary-specific vendors for rotary projects when possible.

I checked the link above and the credit is $100 toward Series 2 upgrades and $125 toward Infinity upgrades.
