A/C flow modes reversed

something i discovered recently is that when i use the **** on the ac panel to direct air flow according to the selection it should go Vent -> B/L -> Heat -> H/D -> Defrost but instead the actual flow is reversed. when i select Defrost it actuates Vent and vice versa, B/L actuates H/D and vice versa with Heat being in the middle actuating correctly. what could cause this? i was thinking it was something as simple as some pins in the connectors being crossed but when i took off the AC panel all the wiring seems to have never been touched, there was a seal on the heater control unit that hadn't been broken, etc. looking into the wiring diagrams it shows the wires leading to an air flow mode actuator but i can't get an idea of how it operates from the picture.. i don't see how it would reverse the flow if it malfunctioned. i'd like to avoid taking off my dashboard if the fix is as simple as crossing some pins.. so if any of you know the cause or feel like troubleshooting for free please advise.
