Well tonight i finally got the engine out!
A bit of spannering...
Out she goes....
And put to bed...for a bit, at least
And here it is, ready for the butchering....
This weekend will be spent mostly tearing the above apart. Quick question though, i plan on painting the engine - is it best to clean the housings while they are apart, or assemble the engine, tape over the ports and go nuts with a wire brush?

Well, set to work dismantling the engine this evening, did a good hours work...
The turbos:
One small crack in the housing, but pretty minimal
Shaft play is VERY minimal to non-existant. If you puush and pull it forward 1 in 10 times youll feel a slight knock, and the secondary turbo has no play at all.

Engine teardown COMPLETE!!
Removing fly:
Tension bolts exposed...
The rotor in the chamber...
Housing removed..
Wear marks on the housing...doesnt look too bad!
Rotor removed...centre plate exposed...
front rotor housing:
I think this is what caused the coolant leak:
The two rotors - one on left has been cleaned.
Cleaned centre plate, ready for spraying:
More pics to come...
State of play now is that i have a few more bits left to clean (couple of hours work) a few bits to spray (engine housings) then i can start building the short block back up.
Progress is being made!!

I know this is a late comment, but your garage looks very familiar. When i was in the UK i was amazed at how small garages are in general. More like a shed you can fit your car into than anything else. Not like here in the states. Good thing the FD is a small car...you never would have gotten my '69 Camaro in there...
Good luck on the rebuild. Looks like you're moving along at a good rate.

Yes efini, thats true - our garages are small. A few reasons i can think of...
a)land is alot more expensive here
b)alot of the areas over here have been devloped alot longer that places in the states, so there is no room for expansion
c)car parts are a HELL of a lot more expensive over here, so people never really thought that theyd need the room because they wouldnt be buying their own parts!
i hate having a tiny garage, but it works ok. I just rolled the car out of the garage while im building the engine, itll be rolled back in once the engines ready to go back in the car.

Nothing in terms of importance, but good luck in the continuation of your work! Inspirational for me, because it makes me want to do the work myself.
But a full-time, no-off schedule, plus an FD daily driver/only car.. situation leads me to just spectate your work..

Thats a shame man, i work full time as a network engineer - so i have to squeeze in the works on the car before and after work...That means stopping at least an hour before bed time to get all the crap out of my hands for work the next day! haha.
Get yourself a piece of **** car if the RX needs a rebuild..

Maybe I would do a rebuild if I didn't have a naggy woman 2in. away from me every second demanding 129% of my attention.. But fate has it decided for me that I don't get to spend much time with my true love
Those with naggy, attention-greedy women understand where I'm coming from..
Good Luck with your work man!

Jesus Roch is it that bad?!!?! Some one is bitter. I have a woman too. She helps. She spent 2 hours standing with me in a cold garage hunched over parts scrubbing them with solvents. And she is naggy, an attention seeking - but she is also very sweet and realises i have to do the car and that she will get more of my attention if she helps me rather than hiders me.
