headlight motor techical data

headlight motor technical data:

i have an early 87 rx7. the headlight motor has an internal relay. the part number on the headlight motor is 661. pulled headlight motors off of an 88 about 2 years ago. the part number on that one is 671

my vehicle is an early 87. the stock headlight motors are 661

my rx7 motor has stripped out. it functions but it does not raise or lower the headlight instead it just makes loud clicking noises as it tries to catch but slips.

i inspected the 88's headlight motor, part number 671 printed on the side. it has an external relay. i tried hooking it up to my rx7 but the headlight motor did not function. i tried both 88 671 motors on my vehicle but neither of them spun.

i then hacked the harness on the 671 headlight motor. using the electrical data in my rx7 manual, i wired it up to the circular plug, by-passing the relay.

the motor worked but would not stop in the up or down position. it just continued to spin. the 671 NEEDS the external relay.

the 661 headlight has an internal relay. as listed in the manual. the relay is internal, inside the headlight unit.

the book does not specify the difference between the headlight parts 661 and 671. though it does show the 671 in the mechanical "part list"
break down of the headlight assembly with external relay. it does not list 671's electrical data it does not show an external relay in the electrical
schematics. only lists the 661 showing the relay internal inside the headlight motor.

there is also a part listed 67x that doesnt have an external relay but seems to work for s4 or s5. whats the difference in that to the 661. can i use the 67x?

if i am in correct and there is a way to wire up the 671 to my early 87 rx7. then that would be great.
the book im using

the parts list showing the relay pack that i dont have on my 87

the wire diagram that showes internal relay that i believe to not exist on a 671 (with external relay pack as shown in picture above)

mine does not have an external relay pack as shown in the 2nd picture. mine goes straight from motor to harness. its an early 87. known to have different wireing set up then other s4 models.

I have early 86 and 87 cars and they all have external headlight motor relays. I know not of the later cars with internal relays.

But your saying the 88s have external relays which does not compute with what I THOUGHT I knew about headlight motor relays.

Only reason for replying is that what you say is opposite what I thought I knew and in fact still think I'm right about which cars have external headlight motor relays. The manuals , 87 FSM even shows the physical location of the external headlight motor relays on those cars.

On YOUR car. What are the colors of the wires in the electrical plug that connects to the headlight assy? And how many wires are there?

Do these colors match the colors indicated in YOUR attached jpg of the wiring?? YOUR schematic says the wire colors should be ......... Red/Yellow.........Red/Blue........White/Green and a black wire. Four wires. What are YOUR cars colors?

Not the colors on the pigtail harness of the headlight assys but the color of the wires in the plug that attaches to the pigtail harmess.

I might get off my butt and look at one of my cars after I go sailing tomorrow.....maybe.
