carburetor shopping

I need a holley 600 or compairable carb for a 12a streetport Atkins sc setup. Is there any reason not to get a carburetor of a different brand? Like a Demon carb? I've always said that if i were to get a carb for something i'd get one from a newer company like Demon. Reasoning that the holley and edelbrock carbs are based on 50 year old designs. I know experience counts, but times change. I know i'm sparking some nerves but i'm trying to be very general. Is there any technical reasons that Holleys are the only choice for rotories (well for this setup anyhow)?

A demon is just a better Holley. The design is not much different, but the quality is. The biggest problem youll have is tuning it. Holleys do need some work to make them good on a rotary and unless you know what mods it needs, then youll be working overtime getting it right. RB doesnt sell stock Holeys. They mod them to run better on our cars. DO a search on this tpoic, its been covered many times. Good Luck!

I'm not sure the AGE of the design really matters; after all the SU carb is celebrating it's 100 year anniversary and it's the grandfather of all the CV Mikuni's and Keinin's.

It depends, also on what you're going to do with this engine/car. If your just looking at a street/autocross vehicle think about the Edelbrock again; I've had good results with my 600 on an engine simular to yours although I think a 500 would work a little better if you can get one cheap. The only real mods needed are heavy leaning of the secondary jets, the "off-road" needles and seats, perhaps a spacer with the secondaries connected, and re-weighting the secondary airvalves. Most of this is dead easy, even weighting the airvalves only took a drill and some lead shot.

The Edelbrock is suseptable to cutting out in short hard corners at low throttle and some fuel starvation in long hi-G sweepers. Both are caused by it being mounted "sideways" from it's intended direction. The off-road needles help alot and I am investigating some simple fixes (baffles, actually) to solve it entirely. I'm also looking at converting 600's to 500's (or less...) cheaply; details to come (if it works!!!).

You, of course have the excellent modified stock "Yaw" and "Sterling" carbs to choose from. Both have very good reputations on this board.

So don't count out these choices just because they're "old"!

Sanspistons for better, stronger Edelbrocks
