Steering Wheel Question

Ok so whoever though of the RX-7 was a god, but short on height...

seriously who though of putting a freaking boar sized steering wheel? (no offense to the rotary community)

I am 6' 3" and turning is an ass!! XD

so my question to my rotary friends is..... Should i get an aftermarket steering wheel?
I am not talking about the NRG quick release and wheel. I mean like for now using the ones you get a autopart stores and performance shops. I've been thinking about it for a while but I want to get some opinion

Battle Cat 10-17-09 05:22 PM

just get a sparco 330mm wheel with hub.... or momo one...

for me its Nardi all the way... but for sure get a 330mm.. its perfect IMHO

iLikeEatPoo 10-17-09 05:28 PM

he is a lot bigger than you so 330 for him might be way off.

ask people you know with different size steering wheels to test drive it and see which size suits you best.

airquin23 10-17-09 06:02 PM

I've got a Nardi 350mm steering wheel, I'm 6'3 and it works for me perfectly. :)

DivinDriver 10-17-09 09:42 PM

Manual steering says I need the leverage of the stock wheel if I wanna park.

thunkrd 10-18-09 02:15 AM

true... i used a 290mm wheel and it was quite hard to park...

might put it back on if i ever wanna go drifting ;)

KeloidJonesJr. 10-18-09 12:20 PM

Have you ever sat in a MR2?

recardo 10-18-09 09:44 PM

i have a sparco wheel with a nrg quick release/hub for sale.. lmk if your interested, bought it less than a year ago so its in pretty good condition.

DR_Knight 10-18-09 11:44 PM

i'm 5'6 and i use a 330mm wheel. it's just a grant wheel but it's much more comfortable than stock. that stock thing's made for busses. it's very nice to drift and grip drive with. and people just think you're cool for having a tiny go-kart steering wheel :icon_tup:

Hey would you let me drive your car around a few turns at low speed so I can see if a manual rack is all that bad? In return you can redline my car in 2nd gear.

how much and will it fit my fc

frijolee 10-19-09 05:26 PM

FYI the nardi deep corn wheel uses a 70 mm dish and comes in both a 330 and 350 mm diameters (stock FC =~ 370mm). The pic above is of the 330 (350 has straight spokes w/ no kink near the wheel surface).

Any aftermarket wheel fits any car if you have the right hub. FC and FD are the same if that helps.

When evaluating dish make sure you can still reach the turn signal. I've got a depowered rack so I didn't want to go any smaller on diameter so I cut and welded spacers into my OEM wheel and moved it back by 1 3/4" to have been knee clearance for heel and toe.

People shouldn't be babies..I've got a ghetto depowered rack. Ripped the pump off and blocked off the lines on that rack...though I am getting a manual rack now lol not that manly.

OkamiAmaterasu 10-19-09 06:58 PM

Hold on!!

if i remove my stock steering wheel and replace it with an aftermarket one will i lose my power steering?

Wait, u r kidding right!!!
I would recommend that you get your hands on some aftermarket wheels at some local shop or friends who have non-OEM wheels to see the difference.

I am nearly 6 foot tall and one of the very first changes that i made was the s-wheel to a 350mm and no worries you don't lose you power steering when you do this.

Anything smaller than 350mm you are looking to have drivability issues ( feels like ass IMO)
besides losing of the airbag Airbag IMO the FD OEM wheels is a joke.

SmogSUX 10-19-09 08:54 PM

no...I was saying that to other people saying they need the leverage.

I'm 6'1" 180 lbs and good for about 20 pullups and I still think parallel parking on a 17:1 depowered rack is a HUGE pain in the ass (but admittedly I'm running sticky 255 fronts). Ever tried to autocross with a depowered rack? It can be done but it's definitely hard.

I'm speechless... Just literally speechless...

Nonono I agree! I have a depowered rack and parallel parking and autocross is a PITA and I only have 245s up front. I'm saying a manual rack is CAKE...and powersteering is overrated. I'm going to try and properly depower my rack while I put in the manual rack...

If you depower the rack correctly and are looking to sell the depowered rack or the manual rack, let me know!

OkamiAmaterasu 10-20-09 02:08 PM

ok so i am not much of a mech but what do people mean when they say manual rack, depowered rack

i am sorry if i am acting like a newb

Battle Cat 10-20-09 02:12 PM

yea a mani rack is a non power steering rack

SmogSUX 10-20-09 02:21 PM

Manual rack = from the factory no power steering. Most don't like the fact that the ratio on the rack is shitty so you have to turn the wheel like 3.5 times lock to lock.

Power rack = from the factory power steering with pump and everything. Good thing about it is that it is like 2.5 turns lock to lock so it's kinda like a quicker steering...bad thing is the PS pump gets in the way of piping and some PS systems kinda go out.

Depowered rack = factory power steering that you just rip out the pump and lines and just put bolts in where the lines went leaving you with a 2.5 lock to lock setup, no lines or pump, BUT it's like twice as hard to turn as the manual rack since it's designed for being setup with the pump.

Properly depowering rack = ^just like that, BUT you take the rack apart and pull out the seals that make it harder to turn. Very hard and time consuming though.

TitaniumTT has a write up on fc3s.org I think...or one of the other rotary sites. He got banned from here for flaming or something. I guess the mods outside of the west section are more strict lol
