Joe

I think you should edit your craigslist post to have more common tags in it like RX7 and RX-7 etc i could only find it if i searched "rotary" and i have a feeling not many people search that lol

Reno mechanic

Hey, I just joined the forum due to a problem with my 89 GTU non-turbo - 108K Posted the issue on the new members technical section and according to Ben at Rotary Evolution a carbon build-up has caused a rotor to stick on an apex seal, so I have no compression. He told me how to squirt some miracle oil into two unused ports near intake manifold but I'm just not finding them. I actually want to get a rebuild done by Rotary Evolution and if I can get it started I can drive it down. Or if I can't get it started I'll need to find someone who can do a removal and reinstall and ship the engine down to Vegas. Do you Renoites all do your own work on your cars or is there a mechanic in town you might recommend? I'm striking out finding one. Only moved here a little while ago. I've done the basic upkeep on the car for the last fourteen years, but I'm definitely shade tree and this is over my head. Thanks for any help.

RotaryEvolution 07-17-12 04:58 PM

here is the picture of the cap/line to disconnect to inject oil into the engine to help unstick the seals.

Welcome to Reno and Im pretty sure most of us do our own work but thats more because thats what we like to do not because there is no one in town that can do it. I may know a mechanic who can do the remove and replace, just call or txt me and we can talk details my number is in the first post.

I sent my car down to Ben about 5 months ago to get a PFC, watermeth, and a tune. The car transport cost me $375 each way. I went through a broker that found me a truck and their fee was $115ish, so if you found your own truck you could save some money. If you need anything else let me know. If you do get it running again you might ask Ben if a steam clean of the engine will help clear out the carbon. Ive read about it but Im sure Ben can give a better opinion about its effectiveness

Ryuske 07-18-12 12:48 PM

You could also check uhaul, they have stuff so you can tow cars. I have no idea what their prices are though.

As for the engine, I don't know of any shops here that do that kind of stuff.

RotaryEvolution 07-18-12 12:53 PM

i did recommend a decarb on the engine as soon as it is running to buy some more time, sometimes it works for a while sometimes not for very long. depends on the consumption and how quickly the carbon replaces itself.

unfortunately the road between Reno and Vegas is pretty barren, basically ghost town after ghost town. if you do plan on driving it, leave the engine running while pumping gas.

Steves13b 07-18-12 08:53 PM

I'd be willing to help, I'd have to come up from Carson tho.
