New smog laws for 2013

I got this off of zilvia forums. Good luck to us.

Ok folks as of 2013 the Gold shield smog station will no longer exist. In its place is what is going to be called a Star smog station or Star Station. Now in previous years we have had high emitter profile rules and gross polluter rules. These are now falling under the the Star station rule as well as certain selection of vehicles that will be required to be tested at a Star station. A Star station may or may not be a test only station. Some Star stations will be able to conduct repairs.
Now as far as knowing if you car fits the profile? Expect any cars that are in the neighborhood of 16-20 years old or older to fall into the Star Station requirement.
As of right now the Star stations do not exist, come Jan. that changes. Star stations will be equipped with a sophisticated camera monitoring system so that CARB can keep an eye on the smog mechanics and the Vehicles.

Now you are probably asking yourself how does drift know this? I am the unlucky recipient of my G20 needing its reg renewed come Jan. I have been informed I must get it tested at a Star station. My G is a 1993 and it has a fair amount of mileage on it.
It fits the profile in other words. Expect to see quite a few 240sx's getting selected for this program.

There is no published list of what vehicles would be in this category. Its all done by CARB in private.
You can thank our wonderful lame duck I want to spend more money than we have state legislature for this.

What this does mean is your car is going to need every piece of smog equipment on it. Seeing as their will be camera's to make sure about these things.
It will also raise the costs of smogs as they make the Star stations pay more for the equipment.

Yes it is kinda big brotherish but again the state legislature has been leaning this way for years. Hell drive down the freeway and notice the the electronic signs that tell you to wear a seat belt or get a ticket.

There will be ways around this...

jayscoobs 11-26-12 09:12 PM

I don't see a way out if they going big brother on us. I did hear once that if your registered to a address in mountains that u don't need smog?

JBF 11-26-12 10:02 PM

It's probably going to be per county. I live in Kern county and we don't even do dyno tests for smog.

RicerJ 11-27-12 02:38 AM

its not always based on county sometimes its zip code too

Never go by rumor; always go to the source:

ozone layer is depleting, not from freon (refrigerant) or exhaust from cars, but mainly from the smell of "cow fart" and "cow shit" in Central CA.:nod: Just drive up to 5 North and you will smell what I'm talking about :lol:

Celestial-Fc 11-28-12 12:32 AM

illegal smog.

jayscoobs 11-28-12 03:20 AM

Oh man driving through there is horrible. No matter what you do you will smell that.

w0ppe 11-28-12 09:37 AM

Be sure to get your cows smogged for the year

BrGreenSA 11-28-12 11:12 AM

Wow cameras at a smog station so those lazy bums can check up on shops without moving a muscle :(

HOZZMANRX7 11-28-12 07:19 PM

Welcome to the world of big brother is watching......................not good.

This is why I only use visable aftermarket parts that have CARB executive approval's and why I maintain my ability to stay on the approvable side of the line.

Siraniko 11-28-12 07:42 PM

Coz of this thread, the price of a smog exempt old school just hit the fan, faster than a speeding bullet lol

DivinDriver 11-28-12 10:30 PM

Up to $20 each now, I heard. Bwahahahaha!

Siraniko 11-28-12 11:20 PM

wow, i was thinking of $19.95 lmao

Alex Rodriguez 11-29-12 02:24 AM

going to buttonwillow raceway sucks too

epic 11-30-12 03:28 PM

Dam, my car has been under P.N.O for about a year now. It failed my last test only..And this throws a monkey wrench in it...Gahh

RicerJ 12-01-12 03:29 AM

what did it fail?

epic 12-01-12 02:58 PM

If I remember it failed the CO part. I was off by like .1% every time i took the test. But that was about a year ago.

RicerJ 12-01-12 08:06 PM

that sucks kinda hard to say what it could be the guy could have been just a little hard/soft on the gas since they have a +/-1 mph either way if its the dyno test

Carzy Driver 12-02-12 12:02 AM

My GXL has to go to a Star Station, no worries since my past smog checks have been clean.

Anyone else notice the 300 fold decrease in smog in the newest cars? And it's still rapidly declining. They need to chillax. You can't go lower than zero, and all the old cars are defeating their improvements literally 100 times over. And those are the ones that pass smog.

Maybe that's why they're so pissy about those that don't pass smog. But really they need to just need to hold the smog limits steady and wait it out until people aren't driving the old cars anymore. If 99% of smog is gone, I'll be plenty happy with what I'm breathing. I don't need more man. This can't be good for the auto industry.

Go work on coal power plants or something instead. I want less mercury in my fish. Something tells me smog won't actually be 100 times lower because they're focusing too much attention on only 1 source. I could be wrong though, maybe like the auto industry I just need to wait 40 more years for the changes to be apparent. Still it can't be good to make car makers spend more and more for nothing.
