New to this forum - off-road style
I am new here and thought I would introduce myself. Well I am off and running as a new owner of a rotary powered rock buggy. It's a little different flavor vehicle than what I have seen around here, but I am sure I will absorb tons of useful information for my application. It was previously owned by a guy named Jake. His fabrication is clean and the price was right.
Here is what I have now:
More photos and info on the rig.
1988 13B rotary, RX7 auto tranny, Mukini side draft, custom header, Taylor wires, K&N Intake, MicroTech LT-8 computer controller.
I picked up the buggy and it doesn't want to start since it seems to flood out. So now I get to poke around and learn some. Not sure where to start yet, but I am just reading and loading the program as we speak.
It will be good talking to you guys. Here is my rig. Hopefully you guys don't mind seeing a rotary in a non-original car. Some places are like that. You should see what they think of me over on the Military forums when they saw what I did to a 1943 ****** MB

Very nice, I bet it makes for some puzzled looks at off roading events. ("That doesn't sound like a V8?")
The engine looks like it has a Turbo intake manifold. I wonder why the previous owner didn't go with a 6-port. (Well, it probably would have been more work.)

Thanks guys for the comments. The fabricator of it did a great job!! I can't wait to run it. I actually worked a lot on the programming today and had sweet victory with it firing up and purring nearly like a kitten.
Here are 4 problems that are currently on the fix list:
1) Lots of bluish tinted white smoke out the pipe on start up. Since I am new to the rotary scene, I am not sure that this is just the premix warmup or if it is worn side seals. It tends to mostly clear up after a few minutes of running, but not completely. I haven't warmed it up all the way yet though.
2) Once running, I hear it hesitate once in a while. Almost like a misfire for a split second, but then runs smooth.
3) When I punch the throttle (no drivetrain load just sitting in neutral), it bogs a bit then revs up. I thought it was a rich situation, but a buddy of mine says it is actually a leaned out problem. So I have to look into that.
4) Wiring. Lots of melted and poorly routed wires. I need to go through and rewire a bunch of it. That's the easy fun part since it is pretty hard to screw up something that is already in the proper location. Actually I am an idiot. I am sure I can screw that up.
As for my previous vehicle. Here is what I turned my ****** into.:
The ****** purists didn't appreciate all the work. :smiley_12
Twofer - I am not sure why the previous owner did certain things. A lot of it was off of recommendations from here and other forums along with a guy in Sacramento area that is a big time RX-7 tuner. That or maybe it is just what he had.
If you guys have any thoughts on the above troubled areas, let me know.
THanks again.

1. should be normal, unless it does it at high rpms aswell..
2. You hear/feel it hesistate, or does it just pop a bit at idle and decelaration? If its just idle and decelaration.. thats normal.
3. It leaning out, there should be a setting called accleration pump, you should increase that.. and that should help.
4. Good luck..
Looks like a nice project, can't wait to see a video.

Nope, just at idle.

Just idle I believe. Sounds great when revved up. I mean I REALLY like the sound of that rotary. It's not hard since my *****'s has a 4.3 Vortec and it sounds like a souped up Briggs & Stratton.

Sweet, that's perfect. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.

Thanks.

There are trails everywhere. Most common good places with technical rocks are the Rubicon and Fordyce up near Tahoe. Then there is down south near 29 Palms Military base which has an open OHV area with mountains. People moved boulders until these crazy canyons were somewhat doable.
Those are my favorite spots. I am actually trying to get the buggy up and running smooth by this weekend so I can hit the Rubicon.

There is a rotary powered crawler at Wolf USA right now. But I could've sworn it was running a Wolf EMS. I didn't actually look inside of it though. Is yours the one I'm talking about? It looks almost identical. And if not then I would surely get a hold of Chris at Wolf. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Kick *** looking crawler though! And that ****** was insane!!!!!! Is it gone now?

Thanks for the offer for help. So far, the help and information here at RX7club has been great.
This is the exact same rig that was at WolfUSA. I just got it back from Chris actually. I brought it to him to tune, but he became unavailable temporarily. So I picked it back up so that I could finish up the work before this weekend. I just loaded the software on my laptop and am about to go do some more tweaks as have been suggested.
I still have Slinky (the ******). I need to do some cleanup and then it will hit the market. It was my first ever fab project so it is going to be tough to let go.

Sam, then I have seen your crawler. That thing is a work of art! I wanted to get a closer look but since I didn't know the owner I kept my distance. I live about 10 miles from Wolf so I'm there a lot!
And yeah, Chris was out of pocket for a little bit but he should be back very soon if not now. Do you have any plans to take it back to Wolf? If so let me know and I'll go up there to meet you in person.

It would be cool to meet you in person. HOpefully I can get out to some of the meet and greets for the Bay Area so I can get to know people and learn more about these cool motors.

Nice setup you have there... ive been kicking around the idea of getting a 13B in my CJ7..... One day maybe...
Here is where I am at right now with the computer setup. It works well except for those items mentioned above (idle misfires and hesitation upon burping the throttle)
If you have any ideas for improvement, please let me know. This is NA (no turbo).

Cool. Fordyce is a sweet trail. A rotary in CJ would be cool and unique for sure. Easy to do as well. You would have so much room that you wouldn't know what to do with it all.
