Moving to LA, need advice from SoCal

Hey guys, Canadian here moving to LA in the next couple months for work.

I will likely have to rent around Orange County since that's close to where I'll be working (Long beach, Huntington, Newport area). Would prefer to be closer to Venice but won't be practical.
Any advice on living in this area is greatly appreciated too!

As of right now I am set on bringing my FD with me from British Columbia. However, I will not have a parking/storage spot for it!
Does anyone know any friends or someone who would have a safe place to keep the fd indoor?

Would be great to try and make this work since being able to take the black stalion on some California mountain roads would be a dream come true!

Sounds like Im going to need to find an auto storage facility.. $$$$$

Hope to see some of you around the OC area soon!

Welcome to so cal! Sweet ride. So jealous you Canadians can get these cars 10 years sooner than us.

Yea...id definitely pay for a secured garage with that ride of yours. Join me for a drive up the angeles crest highway when you arrive.

i'd be in for a cruise too!!

nice ride. I live in Long Beach and i recommend finding a place with a parking spot. Preferably a garage or at least a carport. If you need any advice, I can tell you where the ghetto areas to avoid.

JoMaHa 03-30-18 04:16 PM

I guess it depends on how much you are planning to spend on rent. I live up in Pasadena and most places here have at least off-street carport parking, and many places have underground garages. It’s a little pricier in this area, and parking is still at a premium. Renting in LA definitely sucks, and it’s difficult to own multiple cars in a lot of areas inside the city.

Good luck, and welcome to the area!

Unsure if the OP has already moved but:

Living in Orange county, some places can be crowded, others not so much. Overall it's mostly street parking here. If you're looking to buy a house here, then you'll be okay with your garage. However renting will definitely not have any sort of garage privileges. Your best bet is a car cover.

Hey thanks for all the replies!

It is official- I am moving down to Huntington or Costa Mesa area, still looking for a place. Hopefully will find something for June.

why though? could you expand?

seems like

taxes will be less (even in California)
weather is infinitely better
cost of living is comparable to when I was living in Vancouver (actually is less than Van)
events and entertainment is one of the best in the world (although will be very crowded obviously)
Canadian dollar sucks.. except for 2011 it's been painful to travel outside of Canada
*The Roads- Ive dreamt of driving on those california mountain roads for a long time!

A few. Traffic, people are A-holes, L.A. is rather dirty, everyone here cries about their feelings, and you can't do anything to an RX without getting flagged. To start.

I’ve looked at auto storage and it’s about 160 a month from public storage but then you’ll never get to drive your car.

how does car importation work from canada to california? not all cars can be registered easily right? wondering if buying a car from canada would be plausible.

Davin 07-09-18 01:35 PM

If need a place temporarily, you can keep your car at my place in LA. But I have a lot of motorcycles and FD engine stuff in there already while my car is being put together out in Phlly. But I can make room if need be.

Hey Thanks for the replies!!
Made it down with the FD.. Im in OC area but head dt often.

Davin I should be good now for parking, but definitely will hit you up when Im in your area...

anyone going for a cruise to the mountains or beach on the weekends?

jic 07-25-18 01:59 PM

how does that work for registration? I know youre going to have to swap over to Cali plates to drive on the roads sooner or later unless you're keeping the car registered in Canada?

bax 07-25-18 05:26 PM

I am only down on a VISA for now so I can keep my BC plates. If i decide to stay down here then yes technically I will have to switch the plates over and register, which is a big pain. Although if I maintain permanent residence in Canada this can delay the transition from what I was told.

Is that a real Spirit R? ...Can I see it?

hadokenny 07-26-18 09:19 AM

I go on canyon runs all the time in LA area. Hit me up if you wanna join. I got a white FD. Would love to check out that spirit R in person.

I had the same issue moving out to CA. Not many options except storage units that are pricey.

bax 08-31-18 08:38 PM

Yea all good now for parking!
Sucks I missed the SoCal rotary meet though.... any other rotary centric meet ups in September?

Were you able to find options other than parking structures? I’m still looking for a private garage, but not a storage unit.
