Jdm s5 tii?

Where can I buy an S5 TII to swap?

Is ebay safe? Or those motor importers like jdmtigerjapanese.com safe?

Anyone have experience in this?

Also, whats needed on top of that to make it CA legal?

I can't find any S5 TIIs.

Is it possible to build the engine by buying the pieces separate? The housings the irons and all the hardware etc?

Bro, If ur car didn't come turbo, you'll never pass smog.

I thought as long as the engine is same year or newer it will pass smog?

Yah... 6k is pretty steep...and thats only one. And i already have an Rx7.

there are two ways to do a swap using a turbo motor in a ca car that was not originally turbo.

#1, the turbo motor comes up as an option on the 86-91 rx-7 coupe, on the smog test computer. Therefore, if you have installed all the appropriate smog equipment (including the factory vac routing sticker on the underside of the hood) then you should be able to pass fine. Just make sure the smog tech sets the tester for a se coupe with the turbo motor option.

#2, ca allows for a newer model year motor to be installed in a car, as long as the car meets the smog requirements for the model year appropriate for the engine. This is how the v8 swap guys get one to pass smog. If the turbo motor is from a 89+ model year car, and the car meets the smog restrictions for the 89+ model year then you can use the motor in a pre-89 model year car. Please note, going this route will often red flag the car for an arbitration test center anytime smog is required (every two years).

So no ones ever bought an ebay motor or from those websites?

I bought one for my build. Ended up being good.

Its like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're get.

I went with JDM Engine World in Queens NY. They sent me videos of compression checks. Like i said though, you never know. you could have a blown coolant or oil seal, and they can put oil in the combustion chamber to make compression look higher.

If I bought one, I would expect to have to rebuild it.

RE_Mythic 04-30-15 05:26 PM

With a blown coolant or oil seal does that mean the motor is junk and can't be rebuilt?

It can definitely be rebuilt. Better to have one of your coolant or oil seals go, than an apex seal or something else.

RE_Mythic 04-30-15 07:55 PM

Oh ok. So surface rust isnt a problem? I saw a thread where one guy bought a motor and everything was seized and rust everywhere, but his housing were scarred up from the blown apex seal.

Ok so as long as i dont have a blown apex seal all my internals can be used for a rebuild (iron, housing, shafts)

It just depends on how much rust. Only way to tell is pull it apart and look at it. Dont let it sit too long with water in it. i wouldnt let it sit for more than a couple days.

RE_Mythic 05-01-15 12:00 PM

If its blown coolant seal, wont there be water while its shipping and sitting in the warehouse?

Also, does low compression mean the apex seals are blown?

rotary#10 05-01-15 01:38 PM

Low compression means either the apex seals and or housings are worn or apex seal is gone. Could also be side seals, too

RE_Mythic 05-01-15 01:59 PM

In which case it can't be reused for a rebuild?

So buying a low compression motor is a bad idea

BOOGS! 05-02-15 09:20 PM

it can be rebuilt, but you might have to spend more money buying another useable rotor, housing, or iron. on mine, the side seals were just stuck and it didnt mess up the irons or housings, was able to get the side seal out too without damaging the rotor :)

its all just a gamble really
