can i please get a little help
so i was driving home the other day and my alternator goes out on me so i get a new alternator put new connectors on since the plug just broke and connectors came out with it an now it wont turn off when i turn it to the off position and if i turn it to the acc it cranks it to almost 16 (when its already on) on the volt meter in the car idk what to do this is my 4th electrical problem within a month
the connector's are bss aackwards...
:AA: |
hooked up backwards right now but i had them hooked up right and i got no charge out if it
Wire's are in wrong.
Did you use the FSM or a hayne's manual to put the wire's back the way they were? If haynes do it over again with the FSM for your year car. If you put them in wrong to begin with you may have damaged the alternator right off the bat. I can't remember why at the moment but the FSM says that if the connection's are backwards you will damage the rectifier. It also says not to ground the L terminal while the engine is running and not to start the engine with the L and R terminal's disconnected. R is the top of the T and L is the bottom of the T. B is of course the stud that sticks up and goes to the battery. If you put them in the right way and you aren't seeing 13-14.7 volt's then the alternator is dead. Anything less than 12.5 or more than 14.7 then it's been damaged and it's dead. |
im actually using the print out i got from on demand when i had my ignition wire redone but ill go back to auto zone and get another one
Best bet is to verify wiring and then test with a voltmeter and see if you get a reading.
can someone please verify the black/white and the white/black spots
Check the wiring. If it's not that, then the regulator on the alternator is bad.
i just got another one and its doing the same thing as the last one and yes this time its hooked up right
damn man..good luck.
:AA: |
time to go LS1
funny thing about that is even i have been giving that some thought..gheez. what's wrong with me..
:AA: |
That connector goes to the voltage regulator inside the alternator. If the voltage regulator is wonky OR if that connector is wonky then you'll get high voltage. It's not uncommon to have two or three bad alternators in a row but if it seems like a bad voltage regulator every time then I'd suspect something's still up with that connector or whatever the wires lead to.
LS1 is unrelated lol. |
have you actually checked with a multimeter what the output voltage is coming from the alternator? Maybe the volt gauge inside the cluster is messed up.......
well when i swapped out the alt for the other one i had it tested on the car right then and there the output on the alt was 15+ yet the battery was only reading 12.57 or so wtf
12.57......you took that reading at idle? what about at 1500 rpm's? do you have a dual alt pulley setup? sometimes the dual alt pulley is larger than stock and makes less voltage at idle. try checking at 1500 rpm if you do........
no its the single stock pulley and now i get a problem with turning my car off that comes and goes
so you have a S4 RX7? just going by the pic from your avatar....
using a S4 70A alt? or upgraded to a S5 alt? What do you have? |
yes its an s4 with the s4 alt oh and when i had it looked at today by the teacher who teaches electrical it had a reading of 47+ volts!!!! WTF once but the time before that it was 14 or 15

You can bring it by my shop but I gotta charge a 1 hour diagnostic which is $105 which might be too much. I should be able to get it lower for you though since it's on my time. Looking at about $50 and I'll figure it out within an hour. Give me a call sometime today and let me know. |
im going back to where they did my ignition wire tomorrow morning since the teacher thinks they messed something up with that causing this but if it doesnt get fixed then ill give you a call
