hi all, I have a question about buying FD. After the transaction of buying, what should I get from the seller(california state)? what is the normal process of buying an FD?

if you mean buying a CAR in general title/pink slip or bill of sale, copy of drivers license/ID, reregistration tags if needed, smog papers if already smoged

what should an owner of an FD should have in after owning the car? thanks

The OP is from signapore and not CA. Im not to sure how it works to sell and ship a car from the US out. Is there any importing guidelines that you have to follow in your country?

actually I am from Singapore but the one who is buying the car is my cousins. they stay at mountain view, CA. It is on California not in Singapore. thanks

When you buy the car they have to sign over the "pink" slip to you (or whoever's name your going to register under). The car has to be smogged (pass emissions test) before the dmv will transfer the title to the new owner. Make sure the seller has the car smogged before you buy. A lot of sellers will tell you that it should pass but really they just want your money and let you handle the problems.

that is exactly what I wanted to ask.. when the buyer signed over the pink slip and the seller signed over also the pink slip then will it directly be a certificate that my cousin should got already after the signing or the seller should take the certificate or somebody called the pink slip to the DMV first then have it sent to the new owner( my cousin) maybe by mail/post?

Your cousin should have the pink slip in hand after he paid for it. From there he takes it to the DMV and registers it under his name (As stated before the title won't be transferred over until the car passes emissions test). If the seller sold the car as is then he/she had to sign a bill of sale stating that its not theirs anymore.

Unless otherwise agreed it is the SELLER'S responsibility to smog the car prior to the sale.

So things your cousin should get from the seller are a recent smog certificate, pink slip, bill of sale, and of course the car lol

thanks you guys but the thing is that my cousin already have the car and the bill of sale but the certificate of ownership, the dealer said that the dealer will take care of this and it is already been a week.

Well if the car is financed (which its probably not) then you won't get the pink slip until it is paid off.I've never driven off the lot by paying cash but when I bought my bike from the dealer it took a few weeks to get my registration in the mail.

the car was not in finance or anything that related to installment. It was paid in full payment. The dealer said that it will be taken care of by them and it will be send it for like 2 weeks by mail. Is it weird or normal?thanks

its normal, when i got my truck from the dealer it took about 2months to receive my pink and new license plates

why do the dealer need that much of the time to transfer the title? are trucks and car different? When I heard that it is normal, I am relieved. thanks you LIMON.:nod:

one more question about this are there any chance that this will be a scam? any of you guys experience it and how do you guys handle it? there were temporary document about the car and i think there is bill of sale. but not the pink slip. thanks

In your original post it seemed as the purchase was made through a private party not a dealer. Its a world of difference between buying from a dealer vs a private party.

If the car was bought through the dealer: Basically all you have is the contract and a temporary registration. The dealer takes care of everything for you since you are paying them for it. Have your cousin look at his contract he will see license and registration fees on there.

In a couple of months time the registration, tags and pink slip arrive in the mail from the DMV.


How would we know? Did he buy it from an actual dealer or did he pull up to some dude in a random dirt patch with five cars that are on the side of the road?

If its an actual dealer I seriously doubt it's a scam... When you buy from an actual dealer the pink slip is not given with the car.

alrite.. but does actual dealer mean as the private dealer also? I mean it is a license dealer but not like toyota dealer or mazda dealer. does it mean the same about the car did not come with the pink slip?
