What rear to use?
 

I bought a 86 GXL as a parts car and now that its stripped to nothing I'd like to put a V8 in it i have all the other infor i need but anyone out there who's done it what rear should I use? Can't use the stock its gone, is there a solid axle out there that is about the right width?

Anyways, I'm putting a 383 in my 86 GXL... lots of guys say the TII rears will take a lot of punishment... if you're not worried about keeping the Independant rear suspension, lots of guys put ford 9" rears in their V8 mazda's (although a chevy 12 bolt--lighter, less expencive, and less hp drain-- will do just fine!)

will the ford 9" rear end fit in the rx-7? or the chevy 12 bolt? i never thought a muscle car rear-end would fit into a rx-7, that would make me want to do a engine swap even more.

I've heard most guys put the ford 9" rear in their mazda's without many problems... although that's way overkill... a chevy 12 bolt would do fine... and if the ford unit fits up there, I don't see why the chevy wouldn't.

But I've been poking around, I found a rear diff made by "KAAZ" that is supposed to be pretty strong. They go on the 3rd gen's though, i don't know about the second.

Or, I originally asked this question a long time ago, but some people are putting vette (c-4) rear ends in them to keep the indepentand rear suspension, I guess it depends on which you like better, good handeling, or pulling wheelies at the grad strip :D

I have an 86 rx7 with the limited slip diff (LSD) in it. The guys on this site say that it should hold up pretty good, as long as I don't go racing with slicks every week and launching hard. But I plan on not touching the rear untill it breaks... and I don't plan on breaking the rear on perpose either, so we'll see what it will take I guess. A light car with lots of torque shouldn't be that hard on parts though.

the 9" will fit if its from a older mustang. if you get one from a truck you will have to have it cut down. the 12-bolt shold fit if anything it will need to be cut down but i dont know for sure. im running the stock rear in my 350 swap play car. it held up ok but its starting to take its tole. ime looking to get a 9" if i can get it for a good price... it is def. stronger than anything else but if not ill just get a tII rear.
