Toyota 3UR-FE Swap?
 

Hi, i have always wanted to to a 2jz swap on my 93 fd. However after I saw the Speed Hunters article on a 2500 hp 3UR-FE powered supra, I was truly intrigued. After doing some further research i was amazed by the potential of this toyota engine (and how much lighter it is compared to a 2jz) and i thought of the possibility of putting it inside a RX7. From the pictures of the article, however, the engine looked huge and i am not sure if it will fit inside a fd (i've never seen a 3ur-fe in person so i can't say for sure). So my questions are: would it fit? would you guys suggest such a swap? if anyone has done it, what was the cost and how did you mount it? (if you have done it can you please post some photos of the build?) Thanks a lot.

Intriguing yes but there is a reason folks use push rod v motors. The OHC is just too huge.

I'd see if you can find a blown motor and mock it up but I don't think it will fit. It certainly didn't fit well in that supra. A lot of cutting it seems.

The brake booster will 100% have an issue. Maybe the shock towers.

I'm assuming you noticed in the Speedhunter article that they totally removed the firewall, and a large segment of the transmission tunnel to make this work in the Supra. So, my guess is, no, it won't fit, not without serious modifications to the chassis (they also caged the car, pretty much a must with that kind of power, and particularly when they've cut up the chassis so much - not just the firewall and the tunnel, but also ahead of the front wheels - I would hope their cage extends at least to the front suspension area).

More critically, it appears to have bare mm to spare between the Supra's strut towers, and the Supra is a considerably larger car than an FD. An LS V8 will be lighter than the Toyota engine, pretty much assured, and also has a lot of potential if you want to boost the crap out of it. I'd go with the easier packaging. The only reason in the Supra to do otherwise is probably to keep it Toyota powered. And have something very unique.
