Reverse lights with an 88 FC V8 project

Hi all,

I am having a little of a hard time finishing up some minor things before I can pass a safety inspection for my FC. I wanted to see if anyone has any input on how I can wire in the reverse lights in my 88 GXL with a T5 world class 5 speed trans.

I was thinking it would be fairly straightforward judging by what I found at http://www.grannysspeedshop.com/. Here are the details of the prodecure from the site...

...Connecting The Back-up Lite Switch...
...to operate the RX-7's back-up lites, Mazda used a transmission mounted SPST switch to complete the circuit. When the RX-7's engine harness is removed with the rotary engine, part of this circuit is removed as well. To restore this circuit, a harness extension will need to be added at connector X-04, a rectangular 6 pole connector (2 rows of 3) located under the hood on the driver's side of the brake master cylinder. 2 of the wires in this connector are for the back-up lite switch. These wires wires are...
...black wire w/ yellow stripe- comes from 7.5a fuse in underdash fusebox.
...red wire w/ green stripe- goes to back-up lites.
Connecting these two wires together w/ a jumper wire will turn on the RX-7's back-up lites when the ignition switch is in the "ignition" and "start" positions. Routing and connecting these two wires to your new transmission's back-up lite switch will enable the RX-7 back-up lites when "reverse" position of the shifter is selected.
I'm confused with the part that I noted in bold above. I believe the X-04 connector is the one shown in this photo, https://www.dropbox.com/s/gjeogmlqgg...2000.18.55.jpg but I wanted to double check with others on the site to make sure I'm on the right path.

Thanks in advance!

Any input?

I think you are on the right path. I can't tell from the picture, but you are probably right, that's X-04. I would make a simple jumper out of a piece of wire and jump between the two pins on X-04 described in Granny's instructions. With your key "on" the reverse lights should come on when those two pins are jumped.

Once you have verified the correct two wires, you should probably cut them (or depin them if you have the patience) from X-04 extend them with solder & shrink wrap (or butt conntctors) and run the lengthened wires directly to the reverse switch on your T-5 transmission.

Sorry for the delay on getting back on this. I've been playing with this toy lately:

Anyway, I ended up getting the reverse lights all wired up however I couldn't do it the easy way via the connector in the engine bay. Unfortunately I had a short in the line coming from the fuse box so I ended up just re-wiring everything up to that point and now I'm all set. lol, a pain in the butt for something that should have been simple but such is life.

Yeah, now I can go attempt to get inspected :-)

Thanks for the help on this!
