Holy shit John, you are insane!! You are never going to get that thing done if you keep upgrading!!!
Thats awesome, give me a call when you need some help. I am sure putting it back in will be interesting.
Justus

LT1-7 02-07-04 11:36 AM

this thing will be street driven 95% of the time if not more.

Justus, I know this will take some time to finish but my heads are going to take 3 weeks anyways. It'll be done when my heads are done, probably. One thing for sure is that it's going to be real interesting putting the engine back in. The exhaust manifolds are made with such tight bends in such a cramped area that they'll have to go in with the engine. There simply just isn't enough room to get my hands to tighten the bolts otherwise

Boy, good luck fitting an LT1, those 2 hair driers, an intercooler and a radiator in an FD without cutting the firewall. Looks good and good luck!

383Mazda 02-14-04 06:00 PM

Man, it's a shame....
You're going to have a light car making over 700hp and who knows how much torque... it's going to be driven on the street, probably alot. It's going to blow away any 100,000 dollar sports cars, and it's all because you didn't know how to work on rotories :) LOL

Your car is going to fly... I though my 380hp rx7 would be fast.. but man!
Good luck with all the Fab'ing!!!

Very nice!! :D

Wow... that's it, that's all I have to say. Wow.

projekt 02-16-04 10:46 PM

why are the turbos facing the same direction? wouldn't the plumbing be a little simpler if the two downpipes came down the same side?
that and the cold side of the second turbo wouldn't be facing the hots side of the first

A new system is in the works right now using all stainless piping. Although both exhaust outlets will go out towards the passenger side still. There isn't enough room to have the intake sides facing each other and then have both exhaust outlets turn a 90degree right after the turbo

I have exactly 27" from side to side to work with. Each turbo is about 9" and the 3" exhaust piping have a 6" raduis bend. Here are my calculations

2 turbos- 18"
2 90degree bends- 6"
V band flanges- 2"

That would give me about 1" to somehow fit an air filter

The way I have it now isn't exactly practical but at least it fits. I might change some things on the system I'm working on now but it'll probably be just moving each turbo higher or lower

Mean Machine 02-22-04 07:58 PM

So that is a stock block still right?
im not an expert on LT1's but ive heard that ~700hp is the most the stock block can take. You might wanna verify with some F-body people but ive heard that from a few different people who work on alot of LT1's
amazing work though i cant wait til you get that thing to the track

turbojeff 02-23-04 12:09 AM

I think you need to get some heat shielding on the hood;).

gnx7 02-23-04 04:49 PM

THat is turning out to be a bad muchacho LT-7. Can't wait until it is running and see what it can do... and if it is even driveable without slicks.

Prepped LT1 block with 4 bolt splayed main caps, forged rotating assembly can handle 1000hp+. There are quite a few guys doing this with superchargers and built motors. All about the Benjamins.....:D .

Keep up the good work.

LT1-7 02-23-04 10:35 PM

Jeff, I'm actually working on a new design which will sit the turbos back further and won't weigh the front down as much. This will also take care of my heat issue. But I'm working more on getting this car up then changing this now.

gnx7, I talked to my tuner and he laughed at me when I said my goal was 700rwhp. He said he was hoping for something like 1000rwhp.

turbojeff 02-24-04 12:51 AM

There was an 1100 hp twin turbo'ed C4 Vette in Popular Hot Rodding a few years back. The guy said he made 2 passes at the dragstrip and got kicked off for not having a chute. I don't think his times were that impressive, something like 11s on the first pass and 10s on the second. I think the trap speed was around 153mph (!)on the last pass. He said traction was a big problem with the street tires;).

LT1-7 02-24-04 01:17 AM

Damn!! 153mph trap is pretty damn quick for a street car. My goal was to run mid 10's but after talking to Ralph at Ground Zero Motorsports I have way higher expectations. I don't know what my goal is now and kind of scared to say in case I don't even come close. I do know for sure it will be driven on the street and won't be considered a drag car by any means.

WoW that this is coming out great.

C'mon John, what's new?? can't wait for a new update ;-)

tonyttt 08-03-04 08:37 PM

ok i am sold i want 1200 rwh how much i want to go faster i ned a big towl to wipe up all my drool

LT1-7 08-05-04 09:42 AM

Sorry guys. Didn't know this thread was still alive. The only new thing right now is that the car is running and I'm loving it:) My only problem I have right now is it seems to overheat no matter what I do. Probably has something to do with the horizontal mount radiator:) Running Water Wetter w/ no coolant helped out alot. Temp still rises but only if it's a real hot day

The weird thing about driving this is that I feel no lag at all. It's just power, and then a rush of extra power at the top end. My turbos don't get full boost till 4500rpms due to my poor choice of exhaust a/r, but you wouldn't know it was lag unless you're watching a boost gauge. It's a great feeling, hehe.

My near future plans is to change the exhaust housings on my turbos, give a slight angle to the radiator, and maybe install my exhaust e-cutout

John,
Looks awesome.
Can you give me some details on your wheels/tire specs? You got 19"s right?

Last weekend I already bought myself a set of 235/35/19 for the front end, rear will be something like 255 or 265/30/19 on 8.5 front and 9.5" rear width.
I know I asked before but, a good ofset would be 38 in the front and 40 in the back?

How much is your car lowered and with what? My RX is european so standard has the R1 or R2 shocks which are stiff enough to begin with

Any way thanks,

Neal

Speedworks 08-06-04 10:25 AM

by the way, about your lag problem.... just thinking, wouldn't a smaller size of exhaust piping improve the flow towards the turbo's?
Smaller diameter would increase airspeed, no? and improve torque (if that's even an issue with a V8 in a lightweight sprtscar like the RX7 ;-)

fdracer 08-06-04 11:24 AM

nah, the ex. housings are just too big for a street car.

LT1-7 08-06-04 07:31 PM

My offsets are +37 in the rear and +40 for the fronts. 8.5" fronts and 9.5" rears. My car was lowered with Tanabe Super Down Precedeo which had about 1.75" drop and ran just fine. I now have HKS Hipermax coilovers and is lowered only 1" if that. You should be fine with your setup. I'm actually thinking of putting the rear wheels in front and buying new wheels for the rear. Thinking of 19x10.5. I have wide fenders for the front so the 9.5" wide might work with no problems
