Thats true Im thinking of gettin a drop out out of a GTO maybe from ebay
Ive seen a bunch on there |
I'm pretty sure any T56 from a GM will bolt up to the LS2. You can find engine/trans combos for sale all over the place. Good luck. These swaps are excellent.

T56 is the name of the transmission.
Yes, any GM T56. they come in firebirds, camaros, GTOs..umm anything else? You cant use a corvette T56 because its a transaxle. |
Jesus christ, a T56 is a T56 regardless. If you happen to prefer automatic, 4L60E came in the LS2 GTO/Corvette. GM isn't that complicated.
EDIT, I was under the impression that the Z06 was the only one that used the transaxle? |
There are differences in the T56s. For one, the '01+ T56s had much improved slave cylinders. The GTo T56s of any year will have issues with the shifter fitting, and will accept different aftermarket shifters. I'm not sure about sensors/connectors between the years, either.

Is it possible to swap out the tII transfercase with like a ford or chevy 3rd member?

T-56's are not all the same...the GTO's first 3 gears are a good step lower. If you are going to keep the TII rear, I think that the F-Body T-56's would be preferable for most. Shifter/Tailhousing set-ups make for additional placement considerations. I have the GTO set-up, but I also have a 3:55 Cobra IRS so it works nicely. There are other not so big changes over the years, but basically the unit has been improved incrementally for strength and smoothness of operation. Nothing huge, but like I noted above; I would choose based on the rear end ratio used. If you get a smokin' deal, I suppose you could have what ever gears you desire installed in the tranny. BTW, not being a smartass by any means, I seriously would like to know. |
1Revvin- Yes you are correct, any GM T-56 is going to bolt up just the same. Physically, the GTO shifter will be further back, but not unusable...the F-Body will be a little forward of the original Mazda unit, but not unusable. If you are really interested in this swap, check out www.v8rx7forum.com . Take Care, Berg

^Thats what I thought. On the outside, they're all the same, so (to the OP) any T-56 should fit your needs. Search around and find the ratios of the cars these came in (F-Bodies, GTO's, Corvettes) and see which will suit your needs the most. Good luck.

All C5 Corvettes had transaxles BTW. They also have slightly different internals in the transmission (triple cone synchros for example).
The year of the T56 really isn't particularly important, as long as it's 98+, the slave cylinder can be replaced when it's off the car (two bolts and 100 dollars), it should really be replaced regardless anyway. |

I realized there were difference (i.e. cylinders, ratios) but I'm just saying T56 will bolt up regardless- am I correct or no? Because if not please fill me in.
