LS1 Conversion
 

Hi, new to the forum. I bought a 93 FD3S last August and decided to do a LS1 conversion. It's been at the shop since and I'm now told that it wont be ready until July. I know there was a parts delay issue, for several months, but at this point it seems that this work is taking too long. I'll confess that I havent (but shouldve) paid any attention to this project, as the car was really a side project and I'm not at all well versed in cars or engineering.

Any constructive advice on how to talk to the shop would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave

That's a ridiculously long time. I completed my swap in a week with working a regular job. That was 2 8 hour days and then just 2 to 3 hours a day after work. Having a good shop dedicated to the swap I don't see why they couldn't have it done in the same amount of time if not shorter. I would ask them exactly what the hold up is, ls parts are plentiful and easy to get.

I've built one of these in a weekend in my garage, and I'm not a professional shop. A typical swap for me is about 40 hours of work, for a well sorted build. Even if it is their first build, 80 hours is plenty of time.

What about the other cars in your shop guys? That's obviously a very long time for a swap. Obviously they haven't been spending all year on his car. It's not an excuse but it seems like rx7 shops just get bogged down all the time. I can't say I don't contribute to the problem. I've had some shops do me favors and help me out in a pinch. Sometimes when your car is being built, you ask for more stuff to be installed and the job gets extended. If you have your car at a good and reputable shop, I'd just give them time. I've never had either of my cars come back to me on time for big modding jobs.

It doesn't take very long like the other guys mentioned, but it can also depend on how many techs/fabricators the shop has. Not to mention if the shop is busy and has to take care of the in and out jobs.

One thing about these conversions is that there are so many options to go with also Do you want it just up and running, or do you want to have all a lot of these conversion parts done nice the first time? It can take some planning on the build and going to the shop and talking with the techs on your build could really help get what you want done properly.

You always have the opton of choosing another shop.
