LQ9 6.0 swap in my 87 base model...need advice
 

Hey guys! Not sure if this was already brought up so sorry if I'm asking questions that have already been answered. Has anyone ever done an LQ9 6.0 swap in there FC on here? Can some of you help shed some light on the subject? I've been looking at grannys speed shop swap kits, not sure which one too get but ill figure that out later. Right now I'm just researching as much as possible. I came across an LQ9 from a 2001 Chevy Silverado with 87,000 miles for a little over $1000.00 seems like a steal. But further into research I'm not having any luck finding somebody who's done this swap. Is it not a good choice? I'm looking to Turbo it later on in the future. Not sure if its a good motor too Turbo since the compression is a lil high. Looking into LQ4/Turbo if the LQ9 falls through. Once again sorry if this has already been covered, if so plz attach a link so I can further my research thanks guys!

If ANYONE knows where I can read up on an LQ9 build thread to get an idea of what I'm getting into PLEASE share it with me it would help me out alot! Once again thanks guys!

NOROTORS.com there are several detailed build threads on there and the site is especially for conversion 7's and u can find motors alot cheaper than 1000 look on craigslist.com under the automotive sections for a cheaper block. Samburg makes a cheaper conversion kit than grannys or Hinson (huge rip off). my advice is to go with a stock conversion at first and build up from there an LQ9 is going to put down around 300 hp stock which is a huge difference from the rotory. go turbo later on when you recover from the initial cost of the conversion.

I know a guy that was going to swap an LQ into his 240.... he got one out of a Denali for like $400... I remember him saying that the intake manifold was retardedly tall and he had to put an LS1 intake manifold on it... that and the motor weighed a ton.

he ended up trading the car for an 80's style Rape Van and a CBR600rr, and selling the motor for the same price... then got the car back 8 months later with a fresh paint job for just the CBR. You can find those motors alot cheaper than a G.

I've done several LS swaps in several types of cars and buy and sale LS motors on a regular basis. $1000 is a great deal for a Lq9! Down here in Florida they go for $1800-$2000 allay at junkyards. Be careful and make sure u know what ur looking at before u buy. Just google the casting numbers on rear of block and make sure it's stamped 6.0. I've seen guys try to pass off 5.3s with ls1 intakes on them as corvette motors lol

LQ9s are good for swaps.If you're looking to get some serious power,you can do Ls3 heads and LS3 intakes.just like every other LSx swap,if it ain't a Camaro or Trans Am/Firebird LS1 car you have to change front accessories including front balancer,and oil pan,pick up tube,windage tray.

be careful that you are actually getting lq9 that does seem far less expensive then what i have come accross. I hear many confuse lq9 and lq4 but its whatever. correct me if i am wrong but grannys ls1 kit should bolt right up to the lq9 or lq4.

the intake manifold does cause an issue hitting the stock hood. you can use ls1 or ls6 intake but they have been proven more restrictive than stock.

Granny's kit should boot right up so you're right.theres other alternative but I guess it's personal preference. I would definitely go LS3 top end but the LS6 should be sufficient

ls3 is a good compromise of performance and clearance... maybe a little tougher to find than ls1 which generally means a few more dollars but a few bucks for a couple horse power is ALWAYS a good investment.
