Looking to Import LSX Swapped US FD to Canada
Hey everyone,
Has anyone had experience importing a V8 swapped US car to Canada? I'm looking to buy a V8 (LSX) swapped RX7 from the US and driving it in Canada but upon doing my research I came across this: Why is a modified vehicle no longer considered admissible for importation? Once modified (other than having general repairs or routine maintenance), the vehicle no longer maintains its original factory issued certification. This certification is required for importation into Canada. This also applies to Canadian certified vehicles modified in the United States and returning to Canada. For example: a motorcycle converted into trike, a cargo van converted into a camper, adding a suspension lift kit to a vehicle, adapting a vehicle for disabled access, lengthening a vehicle or re-fitting a vehicle with a different body kit. Be careful when buying modified vehicles to import into Canada. Make sure the vehicle modifier or final stage manufacturer has established that it complies with Canadian standards. You cannot import the vehicle into Canada without this proof. Can't recall if I've heard of anyone doing this but I'm sure there are? :scratch: So the car already has the swap done to it. Just want to buy it and drive it in Canada. I heard of a 72 hour wait while Border Personnel examine the vehicle but this site makes it seem like any modification makes the car inadmissible. If anyone has ever done this, please let me know. Thanks! |
I dont know the exact answer, however, if you contact an RI I'm sure they can help you.
There's a list here: List of Registered Importers I did alot of work with Nissan Skyline GT-R's in 2008 for an article and worked with the FBI, DOT, and ICE. Alot just slip through. Ex: When you register an RX-7 here in NY they ask you how many pistons it has, you have to put a number in that section of the registration document even though it obviously has 0. For my LS FD, I put down "4." It's likely one of those things that makes no difference. Maybe its similar where you are. A border patrol agent might have no idea if hes looking at a V8 or a rotary no matter how long it stays there. Hope I was able to help! |

Yeah I contacted RIV, and they said any car 15 years or older is exempt from an RIV inspection. However, any mods done to it is not acceptable unless the mods were done 15 years or more ago. But like you said, this may be one of those things that just slip through lol. I think all you have to do is get the paper work done, pay taxes and duties, and then have your car modified with DRL then inspected (ex. safety reasons) to get it insured. |
Engine swaps (or other power mods) are not mentioned on the RIV documents, which seem primarily concerned with structural/body mods - which would affect the vehicle's safety certification, the main concern with imports under RIV. I'd guess you'd have little difficulty with the import, since any LHD FD is older than 15 years anyway.
