Getting carb/smog legal in California?

Hi all, wanting to know the steps and modifications needed to enable an LS1 fd rx7 to get carb legal? To my knowledge, the car would need:

-Evap canister and associated hardware
-2 factory cats downstream of headers (have been told that as long as they're there, it's okay)
-Specific placement of MAF?

Anything else? Thanks!

Regards,
Peter

Besides the obligatory SEARCH comment. You're on the wrong site and also the best advice for any research on BAR'ing a car: call your ref and ask them what exactly you need since they will be the one inspecting your car.

Even an EROD requires either hope you follow (vague) instructions well or you call up the ref to clarify all questions. Then fail and they tell you one more time the last things you missed.

you don't need to go to the Ref if you have an E-Rod

Yes you do

This should help.

If you needed to ref everything with an EO sticker no one would buy anything with E.O. stickers. The E-Rod comes with an EO sticker and is slightly higher in price than a regular LS3. What's the point of buying an E-Rod, you might as well buy a crate motor and go through the hassle of getting it ref'd.

Good article. Thanks for passing it on. If only I could all afford an Erod crate motors. To Smog Ref i go I guess.

You'll need the tank from the donor car as well I believe.

Project V8 RX-7: Part 13 - Goin' Legit

You can't just buy a GM crate motor and pass BAR. It wouldn't be associated with a specific year chassis so there would be no specified components or published allowable emissions. A ref would not allow it.

Refs today ask for documentation on your engine... receipts, serial numbers and the vehicle vin. As well as requiring every emissions component associated with the model year chassis/motor combo, you need to use the gas tank from that chassis!

That's why the E-Rod kit is so convenient. No gas tank swap required.

Donthitme is right in theory. If you can find a smog tech who understands the E-Rod program and you hooked everything up right, you don't need to go to the ref. But my experience and others who've tried is that most smog shops won't touch it. They see it as an engine swap with no BAR sticker and won't risk getting fined. An EO sticker for an air cleaner is viewed a little differently than one for an entire engine!

That's ridiculous

I literally took my SBF with a cam and lifters to a DMV and a Sheriff even came to my house and said he/DMV just needed a SMOG cert and lights and seatbelts, my car has no side windows a rollcage with a racing seat and gutted interior.

I understand you are trying to be compliant but maybe you can see what other things you can do before messing up your hard-earned work...

So were you able to pass smog with your SBF, cam and lifters?
That's the hard part.
