Ford Coyote Swaps? Do they fit?
I've been doing a lot of research before I start an FD. Ls engine is the obvious choice but theres a lot of hype about the Ford Coyote 5.0 L engines. I've seen the dyno sheets and the powerband is quite impressive. I'm sure someone may have done it but google isn't providing the results for me. Would the dual over head cam fit in an FD? :-/

I cannot directly answer your question but I can give a little info on dimensions.
5.0L DOHC Coyote 28" Length 26" Height 27.5" Wide 4.6L DOHC 28" Length 29.8" Height 30" Wide 4.6L SOHC 28" Length 26" Height 28.6" Wide LS1/LS6 28.75" Length 28.25" Height 24.75" Wide Ford's newest modular is the smallest of the bunch but it is still considerably wider that the LS series. I can measure the width between the shock towers and frame rails in my 2011 mustang is that is any benefit. |
Seen a couple in FC's.
Never seen one in an FD. |

I know this isnt the new coyote motor and an older 4.6L, but consider the new 5.0 is OHC just like the 4.6.
Attachment 661029 4.6 on the Left. older push rod 302 on the right. |

Saw a guy on no rotors with a Cobra 4.6 supercharged in his FC, was huge

Just for grins I measured the width between the shock towers on my cars. On the 2011 it is ~36" and on my fox mustang it is ~34". Plenty of coyotes have been swapped into fox mustangs. However, they have to switch to a hydroboost brake setup or just run manual brakes. I don't know the clearance between the LS1 and brake booster on an FD, but I suspect it is pretty tight. I doubt there is room there for the added width of the coyote.

I would love to see one in an FD. I am impressed with the performance in a ~3600lb mustang. It would be a blast in a car 800lbs less.

Amazing tid bit of Info you've provided. :) only 2.75" inches wider. Thats amazing. Seems like It would fit.

Will not happen if you plan on keeping the vacuum assisted brakes. There are also oil pan issues that interfere with the steering rack. Not to mention the weight.
Those numbers HAVE to be bare block. If you look at those pics and pull the heads the 2" difference is believable. Add heads and not a chance. |
Those number for the Coyote width are from the external edge of the valve covers. I just measured mine, as best I can since it is in the car, and it looks like 28" wide. That picture is a little deceiving since it is comparing one of the older wider DOHCs with a ford 302. The 302s are only ~20" wide depending on valve covers.
http://www.fordracingparts.com/downl...Dimensions.pdf Some dimension info. Losing the booster would be a must with the brakes. |
Of course one downside of the Coyote is the MT-82 roulette. Mine is a piece of shit, and all of Ford's TSB have done nothing to improve its shifting. Some people get good ones, but many don't. IMHO you would be better off sourcing a T-56 and a bellhousing from termi cobra.
Well that and the used coyotes are still pretty expensive compared to the LS1/6s. |

I have the page saved. I was just looking at it last night....... Sorry for the enlarged pic though. The pic was copies from this thread: http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=14854.60
Yes, it's an FC but wanted to copy it here for reference sake. http://www.norotors.com/index.php?ac...ch=20645;image And here's a 2011 coyote engine https://s196.photobucket.com/user/cl...1/012.jpg.html |
You can get a Coyote to work in an FC, probably not in an FD. They are gigantic, and the intake may not clear the hood. You have a hard time making FAST intakes on LS1s fit.

Nope.

Unfortunately, I don't think these will ever fit. It's not so much the height, but you have roughly 30.5 inches between the towers. Given the width of the Coyote, I think you'd have to go with a tubular front end to make it work properly. I wish I could get one of the flat plane crank 5.2s ;-) Danny- |

Coyote is surprisingly not much wider or taller than LS engine and its a couple inches shorter.
It would be tight in the FD and you would have to run a custom oil pan and intake to clear the hood. This PDF shows Coyote dimensions with a sidebar for other Ford engines. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f1283f70be.jpg |
^ Wow thats a really helpful chart. Do they publish those for other engines?

I didn't find anything that specific for other engines.
Here are some LS related specs I found on the same search. |

Cool project.
Did you have to cut any sheet metal at the shock tower area to get the heads to fit in there? Will you have to cut any to get exhaust manifolds/headers on? |
