Cost To Put A 305 Motor In And Drive.

So, it seems to be my rotary rx-7 has hit the end of the road, im positive i have a cracked apex seal. im looking to swap a 305 Chevy Motor into the car now and daily it.

im currently in highschool with a 5k budget. ( not mommy and daddys money )

The motor is gonna run me about 500$. but theirs no Trans ill briefly explain what is is im looking to do to this car.

So the Motor is gonna run me 500$ im looking to basically get a trans and plop it in. i want the cheapest options to just be able to put it in and drive it without doing TO much work.

Basically, Turn Key. Drive.

so im basically askin what i would need from what places to do so. i know grannys offers the basic kit but im not quite sure if thats all i need in order to do the swap. So which kit would i go with? that would give me Cheap. Reliable Power?

And Remember.... CHEAPEST OPTIONS

I'm building an first gen with an EFi engine and I can tell you my original estimate is blown out the water. But I also had to buy a donor car for the powertrain, pass CA smog l, rebuild the engine and fix some brakes on a car that has sat for nearly 10 years. I will be well over 5K before I ever get to drive my car.

I think you should be able to get it going for 5k without too much trouble. Tou have an engine already and take it you're going carberated with no Smog to worry about.

The reliability part is a little different. If you depend on al car to get to work or school, your five grand might be better off spent on something else and make this a side project.

Good luck either way. If you go for it keep posting.

IF you want the easy way then I'd go with a GRANNY'S kit or step up to a RONIN kit.
The driveshaft will need to be customized and you may want to upgrade the Diff to a TII diff and axles.
I just did a 302 Mustang swap and If you are thinking "Budget" that will be a word that you seldom SEE,as things will start adding up quick.
Budget and Build are not 2 words you go together when you do this..unless you know the Dog that guards the Junk yard really well and can sneak past him to grab some "midnight parts"..LOL!
Cooling system(rad relocation) may need to be addressed..I had to cut some metal to place my rad far enough away from the engine. The Trans mount will need a secure Floor Point.maybe strengthen the area that the trans mount will be placed at.
I got Manual steering after I farted around with Power steering and by mistake I did not install it correctly..(fluid lines got crossed blowing the rack)
Easy way is Manual rack ..BUT If I had to do it all over again I would opt for power steering as you really notice that you have a big engine in the car when you drive slowly or in town.
Clutch would need to be addressed to as the master may not have the strength to work on a Manual GM trans.(not 100% on that so you may want to read up on that).
I put in a Wilwood Master (3/4 inch) and I opted for a McLeod hydraulic throw out bearing (so no Clutch fork, just a bearing that moves via hydraulics). It is very effective.
Wiring is Simple IF you go Carb...if not you have to figure out the engine harness.
Fuel pump can be changed in the tank, depending on Carb or EFI engine.A Low pressure pump can be installed in the tank IF a carbed engine is being installed.

anyhow that is my 2 cents...regardless, If you can do it,and wanna do it..then I'd just DO IT!..heh,heh...your car your cash, your dream!
Good luck!..Cheers!
